Cowboys owner Jones holds secret meeting with Parcells

    Dec. 21, 2002
    By Jay Glazer
    SportsLine.com Senior Writer

As reported on the CBS Sports pre-game show The NFL Today, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Wednesday held a five-hour meeting with Bill Parcells, the former Giants, Patriots and Jets coach. Jones, along with a few of his associates, met with Parcells at New Jersey's Teterboro airport. The two sides met for three hours in a private boardroom then another two on Jones' private plane.

It is unclear if the meeting was an interview or if Jones was enlisting Parcells' help as a consultant, but the secret meeting is certainly not a vote of confidence for Dave Campo and the current regime.

Sources close to Jones said that Parcells pulled up to the meeting on Wednesday dressed in a black leather coat and sunglasses, looking quite incognito.

Parcells was heavily rumored last year to be the next head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After turning down the team's offer, the thrice-retired coach again insisted that his coaching career was over.

Parcells is eligible for the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction and it's believed that he has not yet been honored because the general consensus thinks he will coach again.

After shunning the Bucs in the third week of January, Parcells said he was unable to make the proper long-term commitment necessary to win.

"I didn't want to go down there for one or two years and then not be able to follow through with what I know to be the type of effort that has to be in place in order to succeed in this competitive industry," Parcells said on his weekly radio show at the time.

"I'm finished coaching. There aren't going to be any more rumors about me coaching."

    Wrong!

Two weeks ago it was reported that someone close to Parcells sent word to the University of Alabama that he would be interested in the Crimson Tide head coaching post. The university said that the school had no interest in the coach and Parcells' side has denied such contact.

Now, the Parcells Rumor Machine is running on full power again. A meeting with the owner of a 5-9 team can have that effect.

Jones has been clearly frustrated by the Cowboys' ineptitude this year. Aside from Emmitt Smith's record-breaking run, the Big D has been mired in negatives.

How bad has it been? Some of the low points: They benched quarterback Quincy Carter earlier in the season; Smith punched a young player in practice a month ago; Jones admitted two weeks ago that the team made some questionable calls; they were wiped out by their archrival New York Giants last week 37-7.

As for Parcells, at this point last year, there were strong rumors that the coach had been quietly, behind-the-scenes, contacting his former assistants about re-joining a new staff. This year, no such rumors have been circulating.

Parcells-to-Dallas would be an interesting move. Jones told SportsLine.com on several occasions that he would not hire a general manager and surrender personnel decisions. It would be hard to imagine Parcells taking a head-coaching job without having full personnel power.

In fact, his divorce from the Patriots was due to the fact that Parcells could not "buy his own groceries" -- a reference to his failure to have final say.

The Cowboys have had several names attached to them in the last few weeks. Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren, Miami offensive coordinator Norv Turner and Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops, among others, have been linked to possibly replace Campo.

The likeable Cowboys coach addressed his situation with his players this week, admitting that he is unsure of his status.

Just because Parcells met with Jones does not mean there will be a change in the coach's office. But Campo's future has certainly been made cloudier by the fact that such a meeting took place.

Parcells would want to make the personnel decisions. Wonder if Jerry will want to give that up?

Not a chance...Jones bought the team to be in the spotlight and to reap the praise when the team does well.

Man, if I were in his shoes, I would let someone who has been in coaching or evaluating players do it for me. Just sit back and relax.

Me too...but he wants accolades and to be in the public eye. He craves it, he needs it...he doesn't get it nearly enough if he's just the guy cutting the checks.

Geez, Parcells meets with Alabama, and now Dallas?

No way in hell he'll be Jones' lackey.

I think Campo will stay. What other coach would give up their self dignity to be a puppet to Jerry?

You can't stay if you're fired.....and I can think of a whole bunch of assistants that would give up their self dignity to coach the Cowboys:D

If Parcells wouldn't go to Oakland, or Tampa Bay, I doubt he would go to Dallas.

His espn interview said that he wouldn't necessarily have to have control over personnel. Done deal.

It doesn't matter who coaches. The Cowboys still need a qb.

No they don't. They already have both of their "QBs of the future." Actually, other than WR and maybe DL, I don't know of any unit where they may be above average.

Time for me to be flamed, but Dallas ought to take a look at Chris Simms. Parcells/Simms 2.

Speaking of comebacks, did ya'll see the CBS halftime show today? Apparently the Raiders offered Deion a contract to play the rest of the season with the injuries in their secondary, and he's really considering it...

Not Simms, no way, no how unless he is available in round 2. Dallas needs CBs, a TE, and a HB before we think about a QB.

I don't think Hutch is that bad. A healthy OL would make him much better. Again the 1st need is a CB or two. Next need is a replacement for Emmitt, he may be back next year but we need a RB for the future and it is not Hambrick

I was surprised Parcellls would consider it. But it looks like it may happen. This could prove Parcells as a turnaround expert if he can turn them around.

Dallas has a decent foundation. Granted they are missing 4-5 starters to be a conterndor (2 CBs, 1 TE, 1 HB for Emmitt, and probably 1 OL), so it's not that far off, IMO. There defense is decent when healthy (Woodson, Williams, Dat, Coakley, Glover and Ellis are all nice players).

    Bill Parcells = control freak

Jerry Jones = bigger control freak

I will be VERY surprised to see this happen.

If Parcells does take this job, I guarantee you that he will regret it and probably won't be there for more than 2 years.

Parcells didn't tale that Tampa or Oakland job because, at the time, his wife would have gotten 1/2 of his contract value as part of the divorce. Now that everything is settled, he doesn't have to worry about that.

I think there is something you guys are forgetting when it comes to Jerry's insistence on total control of the Cowboys. First & foremost Jerry is a business/sales man, and the Cowboys are his product. Jerry knows that at the current rate there is no way he will be able to continue selling out Texas Stadium. Jerry is also currently lobbying for a new stadium. He also knows there is no way the voters will vote for a new stadium if the Cowboys continue on their current path. The best way for Jerry to get a new stadium, and continue selling out Texas Stadium is for the Cowboys to get back to the Super Bowl.

What is the best way for all of this to happen? Bring in the best Head Coach/Football Guy available. That guy is Bill Parcells. Parcells has indicated that he doesn't need Absolute Total Control of the organization, and Jerry has also already said that he is willing to let go of some of the control. My bet is that they will agree on something in the middle, and Jerry will make Parcells the highest paid coach in the NFL, and also allow him to build his own staff.

With Dallas, Parcells will be able to mold his own team. The team is extremely young, has some very good (young) talent, and has another top 8 pick comming in this years draft. not to mention cap room to make another splash in free agency this year. He wouldn't have had that with Tampa, and Oakland last year. Tampa, and Oakland are teams loaded with vets. Parcells wouldn't have been able to mold his own team with them.
