Any tips on parallel parking? I look at the videos on youtube and try to go out and practice and I still can't do it on every routine. It is required for you to pass the parallel parking on the road test to get your license in Houston. The thing that confuses me is when you are first backing in. Some people tell me to turn the wheel all the way and other people tell me to just turn the wheel a little bit.

Say my car is: [] [] x Car is on the left and want to get to the x. I just line up to the mirror of the other car and have a pretty good distance between it. I turn my wheel all the way to the right until my mirror hits the back of the other car. Then, I usually start slowly turning my wheel to the left until I'm behind the car. It works every time!
Lol, rookie. Its so easy. Just back your car in the spot, getting pretty close to the back car and pull forward a bit....and Boom. You just parallel parked!
Appreciate it, so you always turn the wheel all the way to the side you are parking in while backing in, then when your passenger door is near the other cars bumper (pole), you turn the wheel all the way to the other side and you should be in? I said pole because thats what they use at the DPS office on Mesa/Tidwell.
My method: Assume you're parking on the right side of the street. Drive about 2/3 past the open space, until the back of your backseat side window (or the little backseat triangular side window, if you have one) is lined up even with the rear bumper of the car in front of the space. Put it in reverse. Before moving, swing the wheel all the way to the right. (No half-measures.) Let off the brake, and begin to back in. (The front of your car will jut oddly out into the street while doing so; this is normal.) Once you're about halfway into the space, and the front of your car looks like it will clear (this is where practice comes in), briefly stop. Swing the wheel all the way to the left, then continue backing in. Your car will line back up with the curb. When it does, adjust the wheel accordingly until you reach the desired final parking spot. Practice on an empty side street, using parking meters or the like for visual guides. (Depending on where you take the test, they might make you use posts in the road rather than actual, damageable cars.) Once parked, to get out, just move your wheel all the way to the left before accelerating out of drive. It's relatively easy, once you get the hang of it. And if you don't get the hang of it, just get good enough to do it the one time on the driving test, then either live in the suburbs or tip the valets well.
your side mirror is your best ally in this situation. also make sure you have your turn signal on and your car in reverse so the oncoming traffic knows you are parking
Line up your front wheel parallel with the back wheel of the car you are parking behind. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and back up until you are at a 45-degree angle to the car in front of you. Turn the wheel straight and back up until your body is parallel with the back bumper of the car in front of you. Then turn your wheel all the way to the left and it should straighten you out right into the parking spot.
I FAILED big time on parallel parking my sister's 05 Camry during my driving test, because it was my first time trying at all. lol I still passed the test though. AFAIK, they don't take many points off for not being able to parallel park. You should still practice though. Now I can easily parallel park my almost 19ft long vehicle in the spots in front of the food court at the Galleria.
Parallel parking is overrated, it's really not that hard, you just have to be patient in parking since there are multiple steps to take.
same here. 1st time i parallel parked was for the test so yea i failed but still got the license. im not sure i have had to parrallel park since so i wouldnt worry about it too much. like everything, practice makes every one better.
Totally true. I didn't realize this anomaly until I visited Seattle recently. Holy crap, you can't go anywhere without parallel parking in that sitting (to add: parking is atrocious there). In Houston, just look for another spot. There will be one.
i'm gonna bring my car up to SF for the first time next month, and it's a must to know how to parallel park. hopefully i can pick it up pretty fast.
