Poor guy asked the wrong car the wrong thing. http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/414942.html ---- Dade man jailed in panhandler's death Posted on Mon, Feb. 11, 2008 BY DAVID OVALLE dovalle@MiamiHerald.com Jeffery Karl Anderson, 19, is charged with first-degree murder in the Jan. 15 slaying of Michael K. Harrington, 35. Harrington was a crack cocaine addict -- well-liked by employees at the nearby gas station -- who lived underneath the expressway overpass. Arrested Sunday, Anderson made his first court appearance Monday. According to a Miami-Dade police arrest report released Monday, Anderson was the passenger in his sister's black 1991 Toyota Camry about noon on Jan. 15. The Camry was stopped at the intersection of Northwest 41st Street and 27th Avenue when approached by Harrington, who was washing windshields for money. Harrington asked Anderson's sister for her food stamp debit card. Feeling Harrington disrespected his sister, the gun-toting Anderson jumped out of the Camry and the two began arguing. Anderson got back in the car and he and his sister drove off into a nearby apartment complex. About 6:45 p.m., Anderson returned on foot, shot Harrington and ran off, police said. Harrington staggered into the intersection and collapsed, his hands still clutching a cardboard sign scrawled in red ink: ``Sin hogar.Desamparado. There's an ATM at gas station. Por favor ayuda. Gracias.'' ``Homeless. Abandoned. . . . Please help. Thank you.'' Tips called into Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers led detectives to Anderson, who police say is a known drug dealer in the area. Anderson admitted to the argument with Harrington but denied shooting him. A fellow panhandler, however, identified Anderson as his pal's killer. Anderson had been free on bond while facing charges of possession of mar1juana and tampering with physical evidence.
Hello. Pat Bateman. You want some, uh, money ? Some food ? Is this what you need ? - I'm-I'm hungry. Yeah. Cold out too, isn't it ? Why don't you get a job ? If you're so hungry, why don't you get a job ? - I lost my job. Why ? You drinking ? Is that why you lost it ? Insider trading ? Just joking. Listen, what's your name ? - Al. Hmm ? Speak up. Come on. -Al. Get a ******* job, Al. You got a negative attitude. That's what's stopping you. You gotta get your act together. I'll help you. - You are so kind, mister. You're a kind-- You're a kind man. I can tell. It's okay. - Please, you gotta tell me what to do. You gotta help me. I'm so cold, I'm hungry. You know how bad you smell ? You reek of ****. Do you know that ? Al. I'm sorry. It's just that-- I don't know. I don't have anything in common with you. - Oh. Oh, thank you, mister. Thank you. I'm cold out here. You know what a ****ing loser you are ? - What ?
Better than an eyewitness? It can get better, but before genetic testing, eyewitnesses were considered decent evidence.
But after DNA testing, eyewitnesses have been proven to be quite inadequate. Almost alarmingly so...........what with all of the convicted killers and rapists being found innocent virtually a full life time after their convictions.
There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman. Some kind of abstraction, but there is no real me. Only an entity-- something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze... and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours... and may be you can even sense our life styles are probably comparable, I simply am not there.
*Update* Investigators later found a wad of cash and various coins to the amount of a couple hundred dollars and change as well as keys to a Mercedes Benz in Mr. Harington's pocket.
Which principles (that are relevant to your post)? I only ask because I think I got the same impression from your post that MEOWGI did.............I own a handgun (more than one, actually), but dialogue on this site has opened my mind to alternative viewpoints. I don't really want to give up my rights to own firearms, but because of these alternative viewpoints, I'm willing to at least listen to intelligent plans to remove guns from society. However, when I get lumped into a category with "known drug dealers" because of gun ownership--and that is how I read your post(s)--I immediately think that the anti-gun contingent really doesn't have any ideas worth listening to.
Yes I'm sure that the known drug dealer went through the proper channels to purchase his gun, including the waiting period. I'm sure a ban on firearms would have prevented this crime from happening. On the other hand, I went through the waiting period, legally purchased my gun, and have never shot anyone. I'm glad I have one though, in case someone decides that my house would make a good target.
i love the way christian bale says 'get a ******* job, al'. almost like he's joking with him. sinister....
Forgive me, but do you think... just maybe... when he was shot and staggered into the intersection, do you think at least one driver thought briefly "what they hell -- I am not falling for that routine." I've seen some pretty bizarre stuff at intersections in SF, just tried to ignore it, and this kind of makes me wonder.
