Anyone done this before? Replacing seems to be out of the budget right now, so I though a nice sand, primer, and paint would be just as good. Any ideas on what kind of paint to use if any of you have done it? Thanks.
What surface is the countertop? I don't think I have ever heard of painting a countertop. A new laminate top is cheap.
You take the old countertop off and put a new laminate one on- so the edge of the old countertop don't matter. They are not that expensive. My wife is a realtor and I see houses with her all the time- have never seen one that was painted (that I am aware of at least).
There are places that do things like take granite "skins" and put them over existing countertops. They won't cost as much as having a whole new granite countertop put down as a replacement. But.... I'm guessin' you're trying to go reeeeal cheap. I see articles from Googling about painting countertops. I just hope you use the right kind of paint and prep it correctly because with grease, food, water, pot/ash stains, I'm not sure how long that "new paint" look will look new without soaking in all the crap that goes on in a kitchen or bathroom.
If you haven't already, measure your countertop, go to Lowes's, and ask the rep in the kitchen area that you are looking for the cheapest route to fix/replace your countertop.
A friend of mine painted the counters in his bathrooms. Used a special paint of some sort. It was specially made for painting counters. Can't remember the details. But it was cheap -- and you couldn't tell. Though I don't know how well it lasted. If you don't mind the time there's really no downside. You're either going to toss or cover the counter anyways.
