Peña can come off the IL on July 8, which means the Astros won’t have him for the road trip against the Rockies or the Dodgers this weekend.

“From talking to doctors, there’s some NFL players that play with this, but it’s a pain-tolerance thing,” Astros general manager Dana Brown said. “If he feels like he’s fine after a week, we’ll start some baseball activity. We can give him some things to do, and he might be able to play through it as it heals.

“This isn’t one of those things where you have to be sidelined the whole time. Once the inflammation goes down, he might feel good enough to swing a bat. It’s more how much can he tolerate, which means he could come back soon after the 10 days. That’s why he’s on the trip, to get treatment and maybe, potentially get back as soon as he can.”

Why would you start a separate thread for this?

Broadening the discussion on overall Astros approach in injury rehab --

MILWAUKEE — Yordan Alvarez has a “small strain” in his right hand, but the Houston Astros are hopeful the slugger will miss minimal time on the injured list, manager Joe Espada said Wednesday.

Alvarez was placed on the 10-day IL on Monday with what the Astros termed right hand inflammation. He returned to Houston and had an MRI that showed a strain of a muscle on the top of his hand, Espada said.

    [...]

Espada said Alvarez was prescribed rest and that “tolerance and pain” will be factors in how quickly he can resume hitting. Alvarez was scratched from Saturday’s lineup after trying to hit pregame in the cage in Chicago, though Espada said he had been experiencing soreness for “a few days” previously.

Is the astros medical staff both incompetent and sociopaths?

There has been a lot written about medicine and biomechanics being the next frontier in baseball after/combined with analytics. It wouldn't surprise me to find out in a few years that the Astros have been experimental with recoveries, timeframes, treatments, etc . . . to the point that it is a much bigger deal than what we all see. Maybe all this is wrapped up in the cagey conversation about it all with the front office. It's not that they care about status of players getting out - but maybe more of the proprietary treatment schedules and back of house process getting to other organizations.

There has to be a reason that they ALL look like idiots when talking about this stuff.

Whatever they are experimenting with (I doubt that, but if they are) isn't working as we are awful at getting guys back ontime and on schedule.

Eek… I remember Demeco filed a lawsuit against the Texans due to turf conditions. Probably a stretch but Hoping the same does not happen to the Astros due to medical negligence . Someone else here posted a couple of really good questions:

Was Yordan seeing a specialist weekly and if not why?

Why did Yordan need to go to Florida to swing and then discover his issues?

Questions like these could open the door to other discoveries

It's comical at this point. Astros have the worst medical staff in the league, perhaps out of all American sports.

He’s the head athletic trainer and does not appear to be the person accountable for players returning to action. Either way it’s probably not a good idea to go on a witch hunt now especially on social media
