If you're brand new to the company and you're just a recent college graduate, how long should you wait before deciding to take any type of time off from work? just a day or two for vacation purposes..

i just figured it might rub off the wrong way to someone who may have been working there for a while to see a young kid taking time off relatively fresh into the job.. taking into account of course whether the office is busy or not.. let's just say the workload is normal..

I would wait six months for ONE day off, IMO I wouldn't press it for two..

This is something you should agree on before you start at the company. If you ask me, wait 3-4 months at least before you ask for a day off. You are correct to be wary. I can tell you of instances where new employees basically guaranteed themselves a slide out the door because they got too comfortable (maybe a bad choice of words) too early. You only have one chance to make early impressions so be cautious at first. After you've worked at a place a a few months, you get an idea of what's OK.

Sounds about right, I think three month is typical.

I started this job last January, and I told them before I started that I would be going out of town in June, so I got one day off and they took it off my sick pay. I say wait at least 6 months.

Don't most places make you wait a year before given paid vacation?

maybe most do, but my company let's you accrue about 1 day per month in your first 5 years of service.. they let you buy vacation time of 40 hours though, so i was planning on doing that maybe, but now it seems like i should wait a bit longer before taking any time off...

totally depends on your type of work, man. With mine, I could tell they'd be cool as long as I got my stuff done and got my hours in. I took a week off about 2 months in.. and they were fine with it. (I didn't have much to do at the time)

brand new out of college...six months.

I didn't even think you got vacation as a noob until you passed six months. I guess it's different at different places and depending on the job.

your best bet is to take a sick day.

most places i have seen do not give you sick/paid days until 3 months into your employement. for me i was accruing time but could not use it until 3 months.

i have only taken one full day off, last week, and one 1/2 day off and i have been here about 9 months now.
