[rQUOTEr]The New York Times' Pete Thamel has reported that Scott's Pac-12 and Delany's Big Ten have reached an arrangement for all 12 teams in each conference to play an "inter-league" game against a team from the other, beginning five seasons from now in 2017.

The Big Ten has issued a press release stating that the leagues will be making a joint public announcement at 4 p.m. ET, with both Scott and Delany available to the media following the announcement.

Further details at this time remain scarce -- or more accurately, nonexistent -- and it's possible the leagues have yet to reach a consensus on the key issues of such an arrangement, from what the series will be called to how the teams will be paired up (and sites assigned) to where the games will be televised. But the "Pac-12-Big Ten Challenge" nonetheless promises to make an immediate, seismic impact on the nonconference profile of both leagues, and should provide plenty of high-stakes, must-see viewing for both leagues' respective TV networks.

That doesn't mean there won't be drawbacks. The Rose Bowl will now run the risk of being a regular season matchup, for one. For another, with both conferences committed to nine-game league schedules, another fixed nonconference matchup will leave schools with annual non-league rivalries (think Michigan or USC, and their series with Notre Dame) with just one open "breather" date to fill on their schedules.[/rQUOTEr]

    Very cool.

And hopefully one step closer to the ProAm conferences shedding the Div IA(a) ones and giving us a Champions Division made up of the
    ACC
    Big 12
    Big 10
    Pac-12
    and SEC

    Gallons of Meh.

THe vast bulk of this type of thing is going to mean a bunch of "Indiana v. Utah!" or "Northwestern v. Oregon St!" kind of matchups.

Who really cares? The top dogs in the Pac12, Oregon, USC already play pretty tough non-con schedules. It will avoid, I guess, some of the MAC-heavy shenanigans that the Big 10 schools like to roll with, but really...eh?

As for the Big 10 - it's seldom discussed as being unhealthy but step outside the bounds of college football for a second and realize that the bulk of the power schools there are/were Rust Belt specials - state schools in declining areas of the country with little hope for a short term fix. Eventually you've got to think the years of public institutional decay will affect King Football too. At least looking at conference power rankings they've taken a bit of a dive of late (or did last time I checked)

It's basically the Ottoman Empire of college football circa the 1900's, just nobody knows it yet. At least that's my theory.
