What do you guys think about this? I see all the nice houses in West U, Bellaire, River Oaks and so many of them are on major streets. If the yard is large so you see this as a major problem?

I know the obvious issues are traffic and getting out of the driveway.

    Just curious.

My parents live close to Bellaire Blvd. so I pretty much know what it is like. I had a friend directly on there, also.

My only concern would be if you have dogs or small children. Otherwise, go for it.

Large lots in the 3 areas you listed mean at least $1.5-2m. And in West U large might mean 15k sq ft. It would seem like it'd get annoying but I've never lived like that.

I would never buy a house on a main street. Too much noise, and much less privacy. Also the thought of drive-bys enters my mind.

If you can get used to the noise go for it. I used to live in a house right beside a freeway. The sound of cars driving by is pretty steady so once you are familiar with it it's no big deal.

I assume he's not looking to buy a home in Watts, 1989.

I live on a major street - 43rd. It's not bad. Getting into and out of the driveway can be bad but you learn to time it with the lights in no time. My dog has been hit by a car here (he survived) and our front yard is mostly decoration and is sized as such. In 6 years the biggest problems have been vandalism (car 2x) and accidents in front or very near my house (3x - 1 bad). Noise isn't that big of a deal. Rush hours are bad, but overnight traffic is next to nothing.

It would depend on the neighborhood and price, but no I would not.

You're talking about living on a street where people drive 35 err 45 MPH and it becomes a parking lot during rush hour, right? Screw that.

Well, I grew up on Antoine at the edge of Inwood Forest, and could practically throw a rock into Acres Homes. And Inwood wasn't all that nice to begin with. I would hear gunshots with a fair amount of regularity. Not that I was scared to go outside, but one needed to be mindful of such things. This was in the early to mid '90's.

Yup. Grew up at Antoine near Victory. Went to Ike freshman year (90-91) before going off to military school. Can't believe it's managed to get even more ghetto, but whatever.

Yeah. Definitely more ghetto. My parents still live in Inwood North so I see it all the time. So I lived right on the other side of the street from Ike but went to Klein Forest.

I live at the corner of a busy street. Trash is terrible. Street traffic blows the litter from the streets into the yard. Cans, bottles, plastic bags, paper into my yard every other day. If you don't mind picking up the extra trash, it's ok.

Traffic accidents are infrequent, but they are still annoying. In 25 years, there have only been 4 cars to drive through my front yard or hit the fence. When a car gets hit by another car, it will jump the curb and go right into the yard. It might happen more to us, because we live at an intersection.

I grew up in Inwood Forest the first 10 years of my life. I went to Inwood Baptist School for most of those years. It was a fun area back in the day. Alot of kids in the neighborhood.

It definitely depends on the neighborhood. If I lived on River Oaks Blvd, University Blvd or Buffalo Speedway in West U, Memorial Dr in Memorial or Bellaire Blvd or Newcastle in Bellaire, I would love it. Most of those homes have large lots as well so the homes are often set back a little ways.

Beechnut in the Meyerland area would be a toss up imo. It is still a nice area around there, but the lots are not as large, there is more traffic, and the further west you go on Beechnut the area is not as nice.

All in all, I would still probably prefer not to live on a main street, but if it was in one of the nicest areas in Houston, definitely, but that's about it.
