    Bob McNair:

[rquoter]"Everybody I've talked to — strength coaches, assistant coaches, what have you — say Brian Cushing is the hardest-working athlete they've ever worked with, that his workouts are so strenuous that no one could compare."

"There's not anybody on that field more intense than Brian, and the players know that," McNair said. "When he's off the field, he's sort of mild-mannered and very nice. He steps on that field, and he's a different person. He's a tiger. Even when he comes off the field sometimes, other players will try to joke with him, and he's about to ready to attack them. He cares that much about it.

"He pays the price. He works hard. That's the kind of intensity I think is good. Pollard brings that kind of intensity, too. You have to have it on defense. Defense is emotional. I'm hoping it'll rub off on Mario (Williams). If Mario could develop that kind of intensity with his athletic ability, oh my goodness.

"And you've got Amobi (Okoye), who is just an outstanding person, but he doesn't have that tiger in him yet. But he's young, and as he matures, I think he will become a little more intense."

Love Uncle Bob, but the less we hear from the owner through the media the better, IMO. This helps nobody, and certainly doesn't help Mario.

McNair is out of line for this.

You pick the player who just got busted for steroids (allegedly) and will miss 4 games because of it to be the example a veteran player should strive to be like?

I hope Mario doesn't hear this. Please go back to your office Bob.

This. Saying this type of stuff to the media is unecessary and can really only cause trouble. With that said, I agree 100% with him.

I agree with him too and I have no problems with him telling this to the media. How long has Mario been with us? Drafted in 2006? Obviously all the behind-the-scenes motivating hasn't brought out the passion yet.. why not try the media to light a fire under his ass?

I don't think McNair crossed any sort of line and it is refreshing to hear him speak his mind.

i'm torn on this....part of me feels like you....where we say all the time how bland the Texans are as a brand...and wish someone would shake things up some time.

another part of me feels like he should have said this somewhere other than the media. but maybe he has...maybe he's said this to mario, directly.

either way, he is absolutely calling mario out.

Is he their boss? Does he write their paychecks? Are they grown men? If the answers are "YES" then I think these multi-millionaire football players can take a tiny bit a constructive criticism.

Nothing wrong with this IMO. Bosses try to motivate their employees all the time. Fact is, Mario and others need a little kick in the butt. No. 91 needs a big kick to get his butt going.

I think it's been a well-documented fact throughout Mario's collegiate and professional career that he's the type of player that needs a chip on his shoulder. Sometimes he gets lackadaisical and loses his motivation.....I think this is Bob's way of lighting a fire under him. I have no problem with it.....even though Cushing was busted for steroids, his intensity is unmatched on the field (perhaps Pollard, and possibly DeMeco come close....but Cush is in a league of his own) and that's something the Texans have sorely lacked in years past. As for Amobi, everybody knows that this is his year to either put up or shut up. The kid has had ample time to grow into his role with the team....now it's time to show everyone what a few years of maturing has done for him. He needs to perform at the level everybody knows he can, otherwise I'm afraid it'll be his last year in a Texans uniform.

Telling Mario to be more like Ryans is ok.

Telling him to be more like the rookie who just got busted and will miss games is not ok.

I'm sure even Cush doesn't want that kind of pub. Now the team knows who McNair's favorite player is.

Not sure how much of a spark Mario needs. I mean he was down a little last year from the previous two but was still top 10 in sacks among DLinemen. Amobi on the other hand, you can't use the excuse that he's really young anymore. This is going to be his 4th year in the league and he really hasn't done anything yet.

My problem with this is that he's saying it about Mario. Mario plays hard, and never gives up on a play. He's not going to get better by just playing harder or with more attitude. In fact, if playing w If he's to get better, he needs to improve his technique in some ways, especially on moves back inside. Maybe he could add a move or get better at one of his moves.

Anything they can do to get Okoye to realize his potential is fine with me.

Cushing isn't a rookie anymore. But just to be clear: if Cushing didn't get busted, suddenly his statement would be okay? It's only not okay because he got suspended?

It's called being a leader. If your coach/owner singles you out as doing things the right way, that should motivate you to keep working hard at what you do to set the bar for everyone else. It should motivate everyone else to look at you and try to imitate your work ethic. I just can't see anything wrong with what McNair said and I'm glad he did say it. There's a reason our defense got a lot better after we added Cushing and Pollard and we need more guys like them.

How would you feel if your boss told you to be more like the new guy who just so happens is locked up and missing a week of work because he got a DWI? I understand what McNair means but how do you think the players fell about Cushing missing 3 huge games because he was an idiot?

So you are just dismissing the hard work of an entire Defense and saying, "If it wasn't for Cushing this defense would suck". How do you think Ryans or the rest of the D-line feels about that. IT'S A TEAM. I agree Bob could have called out Mario but not by saying, "Be more like Cushing".

I'm in the crowd of having no problem with what McNair said.

But you bring up another angle of maybe why McNair picked Cushing, other than his aforementioned work ethic. Maybe McNair is picking Brian to say, "You're my man. I got your back. Don't let me down again." (in relation to the PED allegations) *edit*

So maybe he's also calling out Brian not to slip up again by putting Brian on a pedestal.

    Just my opinion.

He was telling them how they should play and practice, not how they should act off the field. If the partner of my law firm told me I could learn a lot from how a certain lawyer argues in front of a jury, I wouldn't look at his past criminal record and roll my eyes. He's good at what he does, period. I don't think Cushing took steroids, but obviously he was on something that got him suspended. He's a Texan, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when he denies it.

I said our defense got a lot better -- I never said that without him we would suck. We already had a good foundation, but Cushing and Pollard brought a swagger to our defense that was clearly missing. I don't think DeMeco would even think twice about McNair's comments -- he sees how Cushing plays and practices everyday. Hell, he'd probably agree.

The only two I could see thinking twice about the comments are the two listed in the thread title. And even then, so what? Mario was drafted to be a stud on our defense and to wreak havoc. In your fourth year in the league, you got nine sacks for our defense -- that's simply not good enough. It's hard to compare stats of two players at different positions, but I think you could certainly argue that Cushing had a bigger overall impact on our defense last year than Mario did.

In the end, the fact is you as well as most everyone else would agree that McNair is right: If Mario had Cushing's fire, he would be unstoppable. The only thing people disagree on is the method in which to convey that message.

cushing has always been an extremely hard worker since high school time. if mario williams had the same motor as cushing it would be pretty crazy
