Freshman will start against Iowa State

    Associated Press
AUSTIN -- Even after studying what went wrong against Oklahoma, Texas coach Mack Brown is trying to figure out how it happened.

"I'm not sleeping because I've got so much to do, I'm lost," he said Monday.

One solution may be some personnel changes, although Brown would admit to only one.

Brown said redshirt freshman Vince Young will replace Chance Mack as the starting quarterback against Iowa State on Saturday. In the 65-13 loss to the Sooners, Young threw for 135 yards with two interceptions and ran for 127 yards, including a dazzling 59-yarder.

"He made some really good players look foolish in the open field," Brown said. "He's a special athlete, and he'll grow into a special quarterback."

Young's poise under pressure impressed Brown and his teammates.

"He's one of the most composed players I've ever seen as a freshman," senior Brett Robin said. "Vince thrives on big situations."

Robin said in his first Texas-OU game he felt like throwing up. Not Young.

"I never saw on his face any fear," senior receiver B.J. Johnson said.

The Longhorns (4-2, 1-1 Big 12) fell nine spots in the poll to No. 20, ending a streak of 50 straight appearances in the top 15.

To recover, they'll need to clean up flaws such as six turnovers, 552 yards allowed and 112 penalty yards. Texas has done a good job of bouncing back after losing to OU the last three years, having won the following game each time.

The Longhorns met as usual Sunday afternoon, watched some film and went through a typical two-hour practice. Then they did something different.

"We conditioned a bit more," Robin said. "We ran a lot of sprints, 100s over and over again."

Maybe it was punishment. Maybe it was just a drill to allow the players to release some of their frustration and to feel a different kind of pain.

"I never thought I would have this same exact feeling in my heart for four years," said senior wide receiver Sloan Thomas, tears welling in his eyes. "We have to stop being babies and grow up."

    It's about friggin time!

Now we will have to see if Vince becomes the second coming of Michael Vick, which he should since he has the talent, or a 7th round draft choice, which he might since he is playing under Coach February.

Boy, this is great news! Vince is just going to get better and better. We know this because Mack Brown and staff have such a fine track record of developing players. Look at Simms and Benson....

Don't know why it takes the Coaches so long to see what everyone else can see more clearly.

Mack and the pack are a bunch of stubborn old fools.

They can't coach, but they sure can recruit.

Well, maybe, just maybe, by not starting him earlier, he'll still be in college next year. Please.

Not very hard to recruit when you're located in Austin, with all the money, facilities, 6th Street, and women at your disposal.

It's a step in the right direction. A baby step, but a step none the less.

Much like Benson starting the week after OU in 2001. He had that one good half year and hasn't done much since. With this coaching staff, it wouldn't surprise me to see the same from Young.

This post saddens me because it's probably true. :(

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking since Saturday.

The only solace I can find is that Young did do fairly well Saturday. Benson, IIRC, didn't really kick ass against any good teams and hasn't been the same since the collision with Williams at Texas Stadium. Maybe he wasn't that good. I do know that Katy would've been the only team to stop him in high school had the UIL not screwed them over in 1998.

Didn't Benson run most of his routes behind Mikey W throughout his career? If I recall, his sudden drop in talent occured after Williams left. Could there be a correlation?

Young has been stuck behind a subpar offensive line from the get go. Maybe he can adjust better, not knowing the greatness of Leonard Davis and Mike Williams.

I think Young will get better and better with every game...Mock wasn't the guy and I think Mack just wanted Mock to prove he was and it was apparent he wasn't...

Remember a couple of years ago, when "Cedric wasn't ready" against OU, and we only managed 3 points. Miraculously, he was named the starter in the very next game. Funny stuff.

I just hope Vince doesn't get worse or hurt. I doubt he'll get better, but I don't want to see him regress under the wise tutors of Greg Davis and Co.

It's amazing how just about every knowledgeable fan has pretty much given up on Mack. It'll be interesting to see how this season plays out.

If it goes like expected and we lose to OSU, Tech, and maybe another, and then Mack makes some changes but doesn't get fired or leave himself, I want to see how ticket sales and donations are.

Charlie Palillo (here in Houston) opened his show saying "news out of Austin, Mack Brown resigns". Then paused and said "just kidding". For a split second, I was happy.

I need to apologize to Chris Simms, it was clearly a coaching issue and NOT a talent issue.

Mack simply is boring and unimaginitive as a coach.....and his coordinators simply SUCK !

One question...Does this loss hurt so much just because of the magnitude of the loss? In the weeks approaching the game, I had this growing optimism that the team would come out and pull off the seemingly impossible, but I never really expected a win. Despite this, I've been as bummed about this loss as I have been about any sports occurence in a long time(Probably since '96-'97 after Stockton's game-winner).

So...what is it? The fact that it was a 52 point loss? That blOwU could have hung 100 on us?

I know most of you are cheering for a few more losses(To result in a Mack firing), but I couldn't stand too many more losses. Roy stayed at school for this? The least we can do is try to make a bowl not started by Matress Mac.

You can put me on this list as well. I've bashed Simms unfairly over the years thinking it was just him. I was wrong.

The Cat loved Simms, maybe he should be allowed back in, wait, I'm pretty sure he still blames the refs on every play still, never mind.
