Not only does this seem absolutely ridiculous to me, its the 2nd year in a row Floyd has offered a 8th grader!! I'm a HUGE fan of college sports and follow recruiting very closely, but this is down right out of control IMO. This kid is freak'n 14 years old and you want a comittment from him? Don't get me wrong, the parents have to shoulder the blame as well, his dad can say he is concerned but there is no reason for him to let his kid commit this early in his life. Never had much respect for Floyd, offering scholarships to 14 year old kids is ridiculous. I think the NCAA should take a look at what recruiting has become and where its going. Holding press conferences to announce where you're going and colleges offering 14 year old kids isn't a good trend IMHO.
This reminds me of that Mr. Show sketch: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fy878f83Xa4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fy878f83Xa4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
I don't know how binding it is, but if the school HAS to honor their offer, then the parents would have to seriously consider it. Who knows what will happen in those 4 years. The parents already know that their son has a college scholarship waiting for him. I don't blame them at all.
I'm not knowledgeable about recruiting but I think it's non-binding on both parties. It's verbal until the kid signs a letter of intent which I don't think can happen until he's a junior or senior. Also I believe athletic scholarships are renewed every year so it's not a free ride for 4 years...a player can get tossed for being a scrub.
I could be wrong but I think schools are allowed to retract their offers. For example, Mack Brown is notorious for giving the players he offers deadlines for them to accept it, so I'm guess they are allowed to retract it or there wouldn't be a deadline.
Right...however you don't see a lot of big schools not renewing scholarships because they're not good.
I think the NCAA really watches over the dumping of scrubs. I think it has to be a mutual decision in order for the school to regain the scholarship or be extenuating circumstances. I don't think a school can simply cut a player because he isn't any good and be able to use his scholarship for someone else.
its usc basketball man anyone decent comes to ucla football is a different story of course. but yeah seriously offering 8th graders scholarships i really hope the kid changes his decision or he just isnt that good, i mean 4 years is a long time for a lot of things to happen especially for a little kid i mean 4 years would be close to 1/4 of the kids life to that point.
