Hello, me again. As you can see by the title, I am here to complain a little more about our voting procedure. I heard (through my wife) that this year could be one of those years that shows the flaws of our electoral college. Apparently, due to the states won, Al Gore could lose the popular election, but win the presidency. that is because of the targeted states he is projected to lose and win. In other words, more people might vote for bush, but Gore would sneak in because he might get the key states. Apparently, this has happened before, but it has been a while. Does anyone know what i am talking about? Clarify? I am admittedly limited - as I am only speaking from what someone else read. I have, however, always disliked our representational democracy - more in favor of direct democracy (a real "one person, one vote). I do not see why a person who lives in Texas has a more important vote than one in Vermont, or whatever (this is not directly true, but indirectly because of the EC). I like the idea of just tallying up all votes - whoever has the most wins. Is that so difficult? As far as dealing within the current structure, I have heard a good ------------------ EZLN
I agree and I've heard the same thing. The electoral college makes no sense to me. Every person's vote should be equal. I used to know why it was created (I think it had something to do with protecting the interests of the wealthy and powerful), but I've since forgotten. Maybe someone here can help us.
Freak, we agree on something!! The electoral college is a joke to me. If something like that happens this year, I wouldn't be surprised if the losing side stirs up talk about a constitutional amendment banning it. I really don't like it. I mean, what's their mascot? They haven't even been ranked in the Top 25 in forever. Rimy, Check out this site. It should give you some 411. http://www.fec.gov/pages/ecmenu2.htm ------------------ 'Deeds, not words, shall speak me.'
Ironically one of the big Electoral College swing states is Florida. A state that George's brother Jeb was supposed to help deliver. It has 25 electoral votes. ------------------
I heard Al has a decent shot in Florida. This is strictly a rumor/heresay, but, I heard that Jeb is jealous of George's success and would rather George lose this election so that he can run in 2004. Kinda makes sense. Everyone knows that Jeb is brighter then George. ------------------ "I know how hard it is to put food on your family." George W. Bush
But his name is Jeb. I would have trouble voting for someone with the following names: Jeb Cooter Skeeter Darryl Verne Gus ------------------
Here's an oddity : Jeb has brown eyes, both his parents have blue eyes. How can that be ? Blue eyes are a recessive gene right ? ------------------ "I know how hard it is to put food on your family." George W. Bush
Sam Cassell, I have a more general rule. I don't vote for people with (rep) by their name . ------------------ "I know how hard it is to put food on your family." George W. Bush
AhPook 1988 . . hhhm that was when George Sr won. i don't think that is a coincidence. I know they were talking about breaking up the electorate after the republicans lost in 1992 and 2000 [notice only after they loose] That way Gore four get 2/3 of florida and gergoe could get the rest ------------------
1888, Rocket River, not 1988. I wasn't old enough to vote then though, so I don't even remember if it was close. It would certainly be interesting to see how a direct vote would change the face of politics. I bet voter turnout would rise, at the very least. ------------------ Brought to you by the letter M.
1988 was not close. Well, it was closer than 1984 and 1992 (as far as electoral totals are concerned), but it was a clear Bush victory in '88. I don't mind the electoral college. If I were to make one change, it would be to make it a congressional district by congressional district choosing of the electors rather than a winner-take-all battle royale. That way candidates could pick up electoral votes in states they would still lose. For instance, perhaps Gore could win some parts of South Texas or Austin or whatever while Bush took the majority of the state or whatever. A candidate would still get electoral votes for a state he loses overall if he manages to win some congressional districts. By the way, I will make an official prediction that this year will not be a repeat of 1888. The candidate who wins the popular vote will win the electoral vote, too. As a matter of fact, this election will not end up being as close as people think it will be. It won't be a landslide like in 1992, but one side will score a decisive victory. That's my official prediction. Write it down, when I am right, I plan on bragging about it. ------------------ Houston Sports Board
You don't get off that easy mrpaige-who's it gonna be? ------------------ When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of yourself and umption. visit www.swirve.com
I read that Nebraska and Maine distribute a portion of their electoral votes based on who wins congressional districts. And yeah, direct vote is probably too drastic a change to make from winner takes all. But I bet if the whole EC fiasco occurs, some kind of change is going to have to be made. And the entire country is going to have to go to remediation classes in social studies to understand what happened. Except everyone on the BBS, of course. ------------------ Brought to you by the letter M.
It's not enough that I predict it won't be close? Like it or not, my official prediction is that the spoiled son of a former politician will win.... Wait, that doesn't narrow it down enough, does it? My prediction is that Gov. Bush will win it. (I don't like him, either, so don't take it out on me. It's a prediction based on my analysis of the race rather than on my person feelings about any of the candidates). ------------------ Houston Sports Board
Nice call. I love the Simpsons. mrpaige, I probably wouldn't vote for that character on the West Wing. Isn't his only qualification that he was a history professor? Sure Pres. Bartlett seems to be doing a good job in the show, but I wouldn't want my high school history teacher running the country! ------------------
He was also a Governor of New Hampshire (in the show, of course). I wouldn't vote for him, either. But he makes a good fictional President. ------------------ Houston Sports Board
