We have Pick #24 and there is people in here who think Pick 24 is gonna make an impact on this team? When was the last time a pick that high (exception Mobly) made a significant impact? (Serious think about the last 10 years who have made such an important role in our championship goals) We are so unlucky when it comes to draft picks that high... I think our best luck is through trades and hope for the best.
Are you serious>???? Thats there team.. I'm talking about us. When have we gotten that lucky.... This isnt the 1st pick in the draft now.
Not to say that we'll get some stud at that point, but the odds of getting a good contributor to the team at that position in the draft are probably higher now than in the past. Especially due to the influx of foreign talent.
People have pointed out time and time again that there are always late round draft picks that can make an impact. Heck, Duhon went 39 last year and became the starting PG on a playoff team. Boston's #24 from last year, Delonte West, got more adn more PT as the year went on and looks like he may turn into a above average bench player. Same can be said for Tony Allen, who went 25. Chances are the Rockets draft a player who doesn't turn out to be helpful. But you never know.
Look at it this way some team is going to get a very good player after pick #23. Let's hope the Rockets get him.
I'd say it's 50/50 as to whether we get a good contributing player. Unless he makes an impact right away, don't expect him to see any playing time. JVG does not feel comfortable playing rookies like Popavich. Not many coaches do. What can I say, the rox just don't draft that well.
My point exactly.... So I think the best thing to do is somehow use the pick in a trade scenario ( if its even possible)
I don't know whether we will get a good player or not at 24 but the chances are better now than they have been in the past. Remember that around ten years ago high schoolers did not enter the draft, KG brought about that wave and that means more quality players last longer as teams often reach for the HS potential in lieu of established college stars. Couple that with the influx of not only European talent but also Latin talent and the chances of hitting at 24 are as good as they ever were. We have not had a JVG draft yet, well not really, and it will interesting to see how it pans out; from the mock drafts there are usually two or three intriguing picks available to us in most. Overall, i'm pretty excited about this draft since we shipped away three first rounders for Eddie Griffin who had can;t miss talent, it's doubtful we will get that kind of potential at 24 but we may end up with a very nice player at the spot. Anyway, I hate to end on a downer but does anyone know what the ramifications of the impending lockout will be on the draft?
SSG, the draft will be before the lockout starts. So, we'll draft someone and won't be able to sign him for awhile. I have a positive vibe about this draft. I think we're getting someone good -- a rotation guy by the end of his rookie season. It's the same feeling I get when I'm about to win a raffle, so it's pretty much money in the bank.
Othella Harrington was a second-rounder (#30 overall). Most of us are not expecting a superstar. However, the chances of getting a rotation player are decent.
Would that draft pick and another draft pick plus expiring contracts get us a power forward that doesn't suck? Would we be able to entice Utah in coughing up Boozer's contract (would we want to)? We'll draft a player only if all possible trade scenarios fall through. JVG showed his flexibility (McGrady: "This ain't workin', I'm a stud, let me do my work"; JVG: [sighs] "OK") last year, but he hasn't shown patience for developing young players.
To help put this in perspective: Right now Yao- #1 draft pick Howard - #5 McGrady - #9 Wesley - Undrafted Sura - #17 Bench - Mutombo - #4 Baker - #8 Barry - #21 Bowen - #55 James - Undrafted Norris - #33 Padgett - #28 Ward - #26 Spoon - #9
With the all of highschoolers and foreigners, the 24th pick in the draft is a low risk, high reward method of improving your team. Worse case scenario, you blow a low draft pick. No big deal. Making a bad trade or making a bad free agent signing can cripple a franchise. But blowing a low draft pick is never going to make a difference. However, getting lucky and making a good draft pick can make a HUGE difference. Finding CHEAP YOUNG talent via the draft can be such a huge boost for many franchises. Where would Dallas have been if they didn't find Josh Howard with the 30th pick, or Pheonix finding Joe Johnson, or Detroit finding Tayshaun Prince, Seattle with Rashard Lewis, etc.
Anyone else wonder if we'll spend the draft pick on a backup 3 and rely on free agency for our PG & PF needs?
Not a bad strategy. It won't kill us if a backup SF rookie doesn't pan out. Whereas, if we're relying on the draft to get us the PF we need, it's real important he does pan out. I can also see us drafting a point guard, figuring Sura and James can hold down the fort if the gamble doesn't pay.
