Both 4's. Are similar. O.T. Is a few inches taller. Carl has more energy. O.T. May be a better defensive stoper. While Carl has a better 15 footer. Both are badasses wen they DUNK Its hard to pick. . . Wats ur pick?
I love Landry, LOVE him, but OT was better....20 points and 10 boards and an unmovable stump on defense. OT > CL DD
Totally Agree.... OT was a BA... Period.. Had that Jim Brown pissed off look on his face the entire game.. 3/4 of the guys on this board have no ideal or ever seen OT Play...
Gosh...Has it been that long? For me O.T. in his prime has a slight edge, but Carl Landry is getting there. Love the energy. Really turning into a nice 4 like we all thought/hoped.
Man.... OT and those baseball passes... He could match Warren Moon with those passes <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/V0mD8JckVYg&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/V0mD8JckVYg&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Carl certainly has a larger offensive arsenal than OT ever did. OT almost always went to his right. Other than that, OT all the way. OT was a much better defender / rebounder and yes he could average 20 a night. OT was a true 6'10" tall and strong as an ox. When you start with the best power forwards in the Rockets history you have to start with Otis Thorpe based on the amount of time he spent here plus the fact that he was the total package on offense and defense and his consistency. I love Carl and he has the strength and athleticism to be a great defender plus I think he is probably a better shot blocker than OT already. Carl can be as good as OT but he is not as good yet.
LOVED Otis Thorpe. Anyone who watched the Rockets back then did, too. It was tough when he was traded for Clyde, although Clyde is one of my favorite players, and it worked out pretty well. Also, I think right after, until they put Horry at PF, we were playing Chucky Brown, Carl Herrerra and Pete Chilcutt there... Otis was an automatic double-double every night. Carl will get there, but he isn't there yet.
OT complemented the Dream so well, despite the fact that Hakeem himself was a great defender. That was amazing. A really tough guy who played clean basketball. Carl is very good, but OT stands out.
At this point, I'd say Otis Thorpe all the way. But, I think it's too early in Carl Landry's career to make an adequate/accurate comparison. If the year continues as it has started, Landry in his third year will compare pretty well to Thorpe in his third...but it's hard to beat the 10 rpg that Thorpe had to go along with his almost 19 ppg in his third year. Thorpe was also a really good assist guy for a big man and was (career-wise and third-year-wise) well ahead of what Landry is doing in that area. We don't know what Landry will be doing in his prime, and I love what he's doing now...but he's not quite up there with Thorpe, and if I had to choose one or the other as a third year player, it would be Thorpe's third year I'd take (even though, obviously, we don't yet know Landry's full third year accomplishments yet).
Don't forget, OT had some serious ball handling skills. He was almost a point forward, he'd normally be the one bringing the ball up the court if he got the rebound
Otis played the Power Game of a true power Forward, balancing the play of the Center. Carl plays more like a Small Forward who has great spring & power under the basket and a good outside jumper. His free throw shooting is great. He plays with power but with the finesse of a Small forward. Quite different and very difficult to comare
Different players really...OT was the prototypical PF back in the day and Landry is more of the tweener we see teams go with now. OT in my book is the better player though, minus free throws which Carl has worked on really hard.
Didn't OT go to the all-star game before he joined the rockets. Edit: I looked it up. He did it as a rocket in 92.
Wow I didn't realize just how good OT was: * 18th in games played (1257) * 20th in minutes played (39822) * 58th in field goals (6872) * 14th in field goal percentage (.546) * 13th in offensive rebounds (3446) * 20th in defensive rebounds (6924) * 31st in total rebounds (10370) * 25th in turnovers (2774) * 10th in personal fouls (4146) * 61st in points (17600) * 35th in true shooting percentage (.584)
I love the fact that we can finally actually have a debate as to a player comparing to one of the Rocket greats, lol!
OT was a beast. Don Chaney wanted a prototypical Power Forward and we got him one for Peterson and McRay. Thorpe ratcheted his game way back when he came to the Rockets so he could better compliment Dream. There is no doubt in my mind that if Thorpe had not played beside Dream for 8 years he would have been to many more All Star games and his numbers would have been just that much more impressive. Of course he was always battling more household names like Barkley, Chambers and Malone for All Star Game recognition.
give me OT any time. i'll always worry about landry's knees if he plays a lot and dunks a lot.. but man, Otis gave you everything every night, and you knew he was gonna be healthy 99% of the games he was around for
OT every day and twice on Sunday. That said, Landry is still young and still improving. Lets have this conversation in another 5 years.
