Obviously, with the draft and Courtney Alexander behind us, we have to look to free agency to address our need for a backup 2 guard in case Cuttino leaves. Here's a list of free agents that may or may not be able to fill our needs.

Hubert Davis-led NBA in 3pt shooting last yr.
    Tariq Abdul-Wahad
    Kendall Gill
    Derek Anderson
    Ron Mercer
Mario Elie- (had to throw this one in)
    Stacey Augmon

Maybe we can sign one of these guys to the $2.25 million exception. All of these guys are definite possibilities and come cheap. The question is: can any of them help the Rockets?

if that's all we have to choose from, i'd think Wahad wouldn't care to play next to someone he was about to sue b/c of a "flagrant" foul.... I like Davis a lot, Mercer might be too much me-first... but hey, we live with Cat, right? Anderson has had star potential ever since Kentucky, just a question of weather he stays healthy or not... and if the rockets want to do the smart thing financially, they'd pick up Augmon who they're probably paying to play on the Blazers from last years trade.... How come Don MacLean wasn't invited to come to our Mini-Camp... i think homeboy can still play, and just think of the great interviews we'd get with two jokesters like MacLean and Bullard!! Peace

Why not sign Shandon Anderson? He might sign for the exception.. Oh yeah, I forgot, we already have our starting shooting guard!

Is it any coincidence that the Cato is the only Rocket with a temperature scale named after him?

Hell, we're probably still paying for Augmon. [IMG]

Didn't Augmon make some punk @ss remarks to the press about the Houston organization after he was cut(can't remember the quote)? Also, it seems that I recall Clutch saying that he seemed disinterested and detached during training camp last year. If that's the case, I wouldn't want him back.

Out of that list I would have to go with Derek Anderson. He is a very ahtletic player but I have a feeling Cat will stay.

If you saw the interview you wouldn't think Cat's coming back. Also, we have a 2 in Shandon, what we need is a 3. So Tim Thomas, Austin Croshere, Rashard Lewis(next year) are all possibilities.

I would take Hubert Davis in a heartbeat. He can play D and can shoot. Gill is a possibility but he wants to start and most likely will re-sign with the Nets. Even Mario would be a possibility. Anderson is either Spurs bound or Nugget bound.
Wahad wants more money and Mercer, well there is only one ball to go around. Augmon is a joke.

I'd definately take Anderson. He's a VERY talented player, but he always gets injured. But imagine how good he will be if he just stays healthy. I think he's better than Mobley too, but the only reason I'd keep mobes is becuz of chemistry with the team.

I would say Derek Anderson would be great but I think he's going to play with San Antonio and Tim Duncan. Can you blame him? Tariq Abdul-Wahad could be a possibility and is good friends with Dream He's a strong shooting guard like Shandon. I wouldn't mind Abdul-Wahad.

Anderson is going to San Antonio

    Wahad is going to Denver

Mercer will want more $$$$ than 2.5

Gill wants to go nowhere but NJ.

Augmon didnt wanna play here before.

Elie left on Bad terms, and is washed up.

    Maybe to Davis

If Mobley goes, we don't neccesarily need to get anothe Sg who can score.... we just need someone who can play 10 minutes a night and defend decently. Mobley was our 6th man scoring option, surely we can groom someone else to be the sparkplug, wasn't Harrington the sparkplug the year before Mobley? I say we give KT the job of coming off the bench and getting stuck right into it!! A 6th man doesn't have to be a guard and we'll be in a luxurious position of being able to paly Shandon exclusively at SG if Mobley goes... get a big man with our exception!!

God why did Sam get caught with all that weed in our time of need? But anyway......you know who I'd love the Rockets to get even though he's old as hell, Doug West. I can still remember him in the 3rd game in the 97 playoffs how he couldn't miss. I think if he gets some PT he could be a good back up 2 man!

My first reaction to all this was to make a play for Derek Anderson or Ron Mercer. However, I doubt either of them will really want to come off the bench. I think the better move would be to just hang onto the 4.1 mil that would have been given to Mobley and hold it over till the 2001 summer. The Rockets could find another backup option later on, possibly in the 2001 draft.

Miggidy, Doug West could be had if the Rockets were interested in him. He has wanted to leave Vancouver for a long long time. However, his game has declined significantly, and he is pretty washed up. The reason the Rockets could acquire him is not because of his current basketball ability but his contract which expires in one yr. If Vancouver was interested in Walt Williams (which I think they would be), the Rockets could swap him for Doug West and Dennis Scott (who is also in his last yr). That way, they could wipe another chunk of salary off the cap for the 2001 summer.

speaking of guys that play no defense.... what about Dennis Scott? He can't play D, but he can shoot the three.... but i think he's more of a small forward... I still think a guy like George McCloud would fit in nicely here, hell any spot shooter could feast off of Steve's drive-and-dish game (see Matt Bullard) Too bad the Cavs traded Bobby Sura, he had pretty good game... Umm, if Mobley leaves, we could try to get Anthony Peeler, he's a leftie that can fill it up.... Didn't Doug West have a problem with alcohol or something a few years ago... he was good in Minnesota.
