I don't know what virus I have been attacked with but need the latest and greatest free anti virus. I have AVG 9.0 and Malwarebytes installed already and neither can detect anything. Background of the virus, anytime I click on google search result I am redirected to another site trying to sell me something. Anybody have any experience with this (trojan?) before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is your software updated? New trojans come up everyday, so it would be best to make sure both have the latest updates.
roll back to latest checkpoint on computer, then scan and remove that is what I had to do. trying to sell some b.s. virus scanner, right?
If you are still infected. You are redirected because there is a PROXY setup. Read # 2. To get rid of the proxy: Start > Run > regedit. Hkey_Current_User>Software>Microsoft>Windows>currentversion>Internet Settings (Delete the Proxy enable, Proxy http) If you are not comfortable in the registry, do not mess with other files. Sounds like a hijacked browser. GL.
I am not all that familiar with computers. Ran Malwarebytes in safe mode and it still detected no threats. I tried going to the registry and got all the way to the internet settings but there is nothing about proxyis to either delete or enable. Could you provide a little more in depth explanation or just a more computer friendly way of doing it. Thanks in advance for any other help or information.
It may have also modified the Windows hosts file. It sounds like you got yourself a nasty rootkit. Backup your files and re-install your OS.
The key part in Uprisings post is to use Rkill. Rkill stops the trojan from operating. Without using rkill, the trojan/virus is countering malwarebytes, making it ineffective. There are many versions of this hack and i had the same problems a few years ago and with Rkill + malwarebytes have been able to easily eliminate it.
I used the instructions from this site http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-security-tool. Its pretty much what Uprising succinctly described, albeit in a more detailed fashioned.
download Hitman Pro, it won't remove them for you, but it'll scan, detect, and tell you the exact file location of it
yup, rkill is pretty good. Also, if for some reason you can't beat the virus. Download ComboFix but use EXTREME caution as things can go wrong. Don't run it more than twice
