amongst all the madness, i started thinking...carpenter has been gettin pounded lately, probably hurting his chances a bit the only other contender, i think, is brandon webb.... who think the wizard has a shot at the cy? discuss.
oswalt: 14-8, 3.07 era, 160/36 k/bb webb: 16-7, 2.88 era, 173/48 k/bb...5 CGs and 3 SOs carpenter: 15-8, 3.09 era, 184/43 k/bb
webb should win it, though a lot of guys are still saying carpenter even after last night. But I hafta think if the Cards blow the division completely, they don't get a shot at Cy or MVP (not that they should win either one anyway)
i can't see carpenter winning this thing. too much crap at the end of the season will have a big influence. honestly, i think webb's been more effective anyway.
Once again, though, you have Arizona not being all that good of a team. Personally, I think that almost makes what Webb has done more impressive, but it always seems as if voters are very reluctant to give to players on losing teams. Another pitcher that you might throw into the mix is Derek Lowe, though if the Astros make the playoffs I see no reason why anyone would vote Lowe over Oswalt. I don't know what the voters will do if the Cardinals slip out, but if they make the playoffs I think it is still Carpenter's award.
He'll get some votes and certainly finish in the top 5, if not top 3. I just don't think he'll win it this year. He's going to win a few in his career.
yeah, let's not forget Hoffman. As much as people hate to give it to a reliever...and esp. when Hoffman hasn't been as dominating as, say, Gagne that year...I'm reluctant too. But in a year where no starter has been all that dominant either--except Webb aside from that 2 or 3 week period--maybe you hafta consider the best reliever. Add the fact that people don't like voting for non-playoff teams (or non-contenders)...and I can easily see people saying "I'd pick Webb...but now I'll go with Hoffman from the playoff-contenders"
What about Zambrano??? I was hoping Berkman could backdoor the MVP award if the Stros win the Central. He should be considered just as much as Ryan Howard and Pujols.
I'm a biased Astros fan and would love for Lance to win it, but I just don't see that happening with all the pub Howard has been getting.
Lance is certainly having a worthy year, but if any of Howard, Beltran, or Pujols win it I don't see any injustice in that.
Well, I still can believe Carpenter would still be considered...No one really is a slam dunk, so why not O... As for Lance, I agree, but unfortunately, the rest of the nation's writers won't...On that note, why not Luke for ROY...
As far as Rookie of the year I think that is going to Dan Ugala from the Marlins. The kid has been very impressive especially considering he is batting in the #2 hole. Having near 100 RBIs in the 2 hole is very impressive. Plus he has good power as well. The runner up will probably be Hanley Ramirez. The Marlins have an incredible nucleus of great young players and some stud pitchers... They will be tough to beat in the coming years.
Oswalt deserves the Cy Young just for his consitent excellence over the past many seasons. Since no pitcher has been great this year, why not give it to a guy that has been in contention of the award for the past seasons instead of some guy havin a fluke. Plus Oswalt is about to take his teams to the playoffs. You could say pitchers cant control that but carpenter choked and oswalt has been very crucial in our playoff run. If we get to the playoffs, he deserves a lot of props.
I'm afraid the idiot voters would place him second best, but you hit it with the reasoning on why Oswalt should be the Cy Young winner...
