Can you imagine the Academ Awards in the middle of a war? I can hear those Hollywood idiots now as they turn their acceptance speech into their forum for anti-war.

I usually look forward to watching but not this year. I think I'll avoid it all together just so I won't get pissed off. Besides, that damn Chicago movie is gonna win everything anyway.

Stars plan gestures to protest war at Oscars

LOS ANGELES -- Actor Will Smith, described as being uncomfortable with the world situation, has pulled out of Sunday's scheduled Oscar ceremony, and other stars plan to wear peace-sign pins, doves and even duct tape to protest the war in Iraq.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences said Thursday it was still planning to go ahead, for now, with the ceremony -- minus the glitzy red carpet -- but a final decision was not expected until today.

Smith, star of Men in Black, was scheduled to present an award at the show. He withdrew Thursday.

"He felt uncomfortable in attending and respectfully asked to be excused. There's no agenda, there's no speeches. He just didn't feel personally comfortable in going because of the world situation," his publicist Stan Rosenfield said.

Artists United to Win Without War -- a group of more than 130 celebrities who have campaigned prominently against military action against Iraq -- has produced a peace-sign pin for the event.

Artists including Dustin Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Jim Carrey, Ben Affleck, Michael Moore and Kirsten Dunst have agreed to wear it on the night. Others plan to wear a peace dove or a piece of duct tape on their gowns or tuxedos. Duct tape has become a tongue-in-cheek symbol of protest, after ridicule greeted government advice to buy it along with plastic sheeting to set up temporary safe rooms in case of chemical or biological attack.

I don't know if it will be good or not, but it will be better than it has been, because Whoopie is gone, and Steve Martin is in as host.

Would it be ironic if the war is already over when the stars are going to do their little "protests"?

I've always liked watching the Oscars, but I'll likely skip it this year just because I don't want to hear it from them.

But I was already kind of less excited about this year's show anyway since I didn't really get into any of the movies nominated for anything of substance (and I've still not yet seen any of the 5 Best Picture nominees).

Jeeze, he said he felt uncomfortable going because of what's going on. Am I the only one who read this as "there's serious stuff going on, now's not the time to be going to a party."

I just don't like how he tries to promote himself as the "good guy" ala bragging about how he doesn't have to cuss in his songs to be a platinum rapper.

If we do not go on with our lives and live to enjoy life and what america has to offer, then bombing Iraq and Sundumb is pointless because they would have won anyhow.

They want the americans to watch their back and live like they do in their country and that is what is happening.
We can bomb them all day and night and they still will win because they have the United states and it's people paranoid now.

If the Oscars were smart they would host the red carpet show and go about the normal business at hand.
If we stop our Routines and events in the United States then Iraq has won already!

Uh, I don't think he's not attending because he's scared. And what's with the "they have won" or "still will win" stuff? It's not like Iraq is attacking us or our way of life. We're attacking first to end a possible future threat.

I imagine the Academy will urge everyone not to use the Awards Show as a political platform to broadcast their opinions on the war, but I'm sure it will happen anyway. The Golden Globes did the exact same thing. From what I hear, the Academy already cancelled the whole "red carpet" pre-show partly so they won't have reporters asking every celebrity who walks by about their opinions on the war.

I just hope Michael Moore doesn't win best documentary.

Will Smith has made a career out of portraying military soldiers. He has an image of a patriotic war hero. It would be hypocritical of him to be a part of an anti-war Oscar ceremony. It would hurt his as a patriotic war hero. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
