Here's who I'm rooting for: Best Picture: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Best Director: Ang Lee Best Actor: Ed Harris Best Actress: Julia Roberts Best Supp Actor: Benicio Del Toro Best Supp Actress: Kate Hudson Best Orig Screenplay: Billy Elliot Best Adap Screenplay: Wonder Boys http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/story/0,1259,-5--5484,00.html ------------------
When Gladiator and Erin Brockovich lead the pack.... You know that... 1. 2000 was a crappy year for movies! and... 2. The "dumbing down" of America is in full-swing! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Go Aussies Go Russell Crower Go Geoffrey Rush Go Music lady from Gladiator Go you good things ------------------ CUT Tino These Heaves are just getting Ridiculous!
In 1994 Tom Hanks won best actor for "Philadelphia" and 1995 he won best actor for "Forrest Gump". If he wins this year for "CastAway" will the Rockets win another NBA Championship? ------------------
If Tom Hanks does not win Best Actor there is something wrong with the academy. I'm no movie critic or anything but I do believe that there is no other actor out there that could do as amazing of a job as Hanks did in "CastAway". Not many people could star in a 2-3 hr movie all alone and do a good job. Besides, how stupid would Russell Crowe look talking to a volleyball? ------------------ "Steve is good. Steve is real good." -- Cleveland's rookie point guard Andre Miller on Rocket rookie point Steve Francis
I guess everyone needs to root for tom hanks! I can't believe some of you didn't like Gladiator. I thought it was good. ------------------ Someone who is about to admonish another must realize within himself five qualities before doing so (that he may be able to say), thus: In due season will I speak, not out of season. In truth will I speak, not in falsehood. Gently will I speak, not harshly. To his profit will I speak, not to his loss. With kindly intent will I speak, not in anger. -from the Vinaya Pitaka
Crouching Tiger was AWESOME, my favorite of the year. I'm surprised that Almost Famous wasn't nominated for best picture. I heard it was very good. ------------------ "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I'm a schizophrenic and so am I."
Best Picture-Traffic Best Director-Steven Soderbergh, Traffic Best Actor-Geoffrey Rush Best Actress-Ellen Burstyn Best Supporting Actor-Benicio Del Toro Best Supporting Actress-Frances MacDormand Best Original Screenplay-O' Brother Where Art Thou Best Adapted Screenplay-Wonder Boys I'm rooting for these. ------------------ "Knickerbocker Please!" visit www.swirve.com, coming January 20th, the top 10 films of 2000! http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!
R95, some nice picks there, especially the Rush pick, very surprising considering your 90ss favs Smeg ------------------ CUT Tino These Heaves are just getting Ridiculous!
I loved Gladiator. I don't know why you all hate it. It must be because it doesn't have a long shoot-out or car chase sequence. ------------------ "Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning how to put food on their family while being put to death."
Good one! Quills barely missed my top 10 of 2000, Rush's performance was the third best of the year behind George Clooney and Michael Douglas (Wonder Boys). ------------------ "Knickerbocker Please!" visit www.swirve.com, coming January 20th, the top 10 films of 2000! http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!
That's some flawed logic. The same people who like movies for the reasons you listed would probably like Gladiator for its brutal battle scenes. I didn't hate it, I just didn't think it was as great as everyone thought. Maybe I'm missing something. ------------------ "Knickerbocker Please!" visit www.swirve.com, coming January 20th, the top 10 films of 2000! http://www.geocities.com/clutch34_2000 for great Rocket insight by some of your fellow BBS posters!
I didn't see a single one of the nominees for Best Picture. It's hard for me to root for one to win without having seen them. ------------------ Houston Sports Board The Anti-Bud Adams Page
These are just my choices to win. Not to say they are going to. Best Picture - TRAFFIC Director - Ridley Scott - GLADIATOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON Best actor - Ed Harris - POLLOCK Best Supporting actor - Willem Dafoe - SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE Best actress - Ellen Burstyn - REQUIEM FOR A DREAM Best supporting actress - Julie Walters - BILLY ELLIOT Original Screenplay - Lee Hall - BILLY ELLIOT Adapted Screenplay - Coen Brothers - O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Who did Julie Walters play in Billy Elliott? Did you guys see Dancer in the Dark? It was amazing and it had no nominations. Who are the idiots that vote for this crap? Maelstrom got Canada's entry, did it get any recognition? It blows most of the films that you guys are talking about away. Maelstrom! Maelstrom! ------------------ Good night everyone, Canadian or American. Just remember that we're all bound together by basketball, the internet and the mullet. (My attempts at trying to sooth over an international incident).
Ellen Burstyn turned in the best performance by far, male or female, of 2000. She is an absolute inspiration. Haven't gotten to see Pollack or Billy Elliott. Still need to see Before Night Falls, as well. Oh, and Shadow of the Vampire. Other than those, I think I've seen just about everything in question. I liked Chocolat, but didn't think it deserved a nomination. I would have put Almost Famous ahead of it for best picture. For that matter, I liked all of the nominees. Gladiator deserves the nomination. However, it is too "oscar formula" for me to root for it. Crouching Tiger has my vote. I agree, however, that it should be put in the foreign language films category if the Oscars are going to continue to make the distiction.(Which I'm not sure they should) Does anyone know if "Thirteen Days" was eligible? If it was, it got completely shafted. The only way for it to be eligible would be if it was released in NY or LA before the New Year. The academy seems bound and determined to nominate John Williams for absolutely anything he does. Not that he doesn't deserve it...I just think it's funny. If anyone deserves a lifetime achievement award, it's John Williams. ------------------ Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me...you.
I'm curious.... Those of you that aren't picking Ellen Burstyn for best actress, did you see Requiem For A Dream? If not, I highly recommend seeing it. That's what acting is all about. ------------------ Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me...you.
Or maybe because every one of the characters is completely one dimensional, there is little to no growth in anybody, and the cinematography was too pretentious for some. I think the reason Gladiator had as much succes as it did was because of the "long shoot-out or car chase sequence" crowd. dylan ps Not wanting it to win best picture does not equal hating the movie. I thought it was a decent flick. I just thought it was a glorified B movie. Fun to watch and I didn't feel cheated but it certainly didn't move me. ------------------
