Mayorga-De La Hoya presser! February 28, 2006 By Whit Haydon Photos: David Martin-Warr/Don King Productions The fireworks continued between Oscar De La Hoya and Ricardo Mayorga Tuesday afternoon at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in West Los Angeles. If the media and all in attendance were looking for free entertainment from Mayorga, they got it in great abundance, as Mayorga reeled off a series of quotes and antics that would make a longshoreman blush. "On May 6th I'm going to make you my b****", shouted Mayorga, clad in an exquisite Matador's outfit. ""No one will recognize you. You remind me of an old lady past his prime sitting in a rocking chair doing nothing." he shouted as loud as he possibly could despite jeers from random members of the 150 or so in attendance. "This clown sitting to the right of me has disrespected me. My strongest hand is my right hand, see his eye? I'm going to use it to detach his retina.....You're going to be my b**** in my bed anytime I want you. I hate b****es and I'm going to make you my little b****." Mayorga looked down from the dais at De La Hoya, who appeared to be seething. Trying to get a rise out of him, Mayorga feinted at the golden boy, who did not flinch despite Mayorga's hand coming within an inch. The antics continued as Mayorga stood on his seat and made crotch grabbing gestures toward the crowd and De La Hoya, shouting "I'm the one with the balls. You (Oscar) don't even know how to represent your own people. (All the latin people) will be rooting for me on May 6th." Mayweather Sr. then went to the podium and went off on Mayorga. "Sit your bum ass down. If you put your hands on me you're going out." Mayorga kept screaming. Mayweather kept challenging him but nothing happened. King interruped "We're never even going to make it to May 6." De La Hoya finally took the podium and had very little to say, but his comments were very pointed. "This will be...................... the fight of my life." said De La Hoya. "I've never had anger except for one guy out there, and he got knocked out" (obviously referring to Fernando Vargas). Turning to Mayorga with fist clenched: "I'm going to knock you out - Credo - Believe me. Credo. You have disrespected me, my wife, and my people and I will knock you out." (translated from Spanish). Earlier the two had come in separately, and the face-off came and went without incident. De La Hoya came in with almost a presidential flair, very businesslike. Two minute later it was Mayorga coming in with his incredible attire and usual flamboyance that added more than a mid-sized level of electricity through the room. Don King said he is aiming for an unprecedented two million PPV buys at 49.95 a pop on this one, drawing laughter from some, yet King never backed off. "Two million is nothing is a pittance compared to the worldwide population" King said. King had fun as Mayorga's promoter, promising that De La Hoya "will have to endure the powerful pummeling of the nuclear tank before him (in Mayorga)." The bout will be for Mayorga's 154 lb WBC crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 6th in what could likely conclude the career of Oscar De La Hoya regardless of what happens in the ring. http://www.fightnews.com/haydon48.htm
By the way, they are supposed to have a press conference in Houston tomorrow (Wednesday) to hype up the fight.
Is that your writing? I remember your boxing post. This story hypes it. Thank you. Man, I am definitely NOT missing this. Anyone know time/date/location of the Houston conference?
Some more quotes Don King: “Viva Mexico, Viva Nicaragua, Viva Pancho Villa, Viva Emiliano Zapata…Victory, Victory hear my cry .. V.I.C.T.O.R.Y!!" Mayorga: You have nobody! Your [own race] turned their backs on you. They told me this!” Mayorga was referring to his appearance on a popular Spanish Radio show early Tuesday morning, where several callers chose Mayorga over De La Hoya De La Hoya: "You disrespected two things that I love. Yesterday, you told my wife something, and today, you mentioned my race. I don’t play around like that! On May 6, I’m going to knock you out!”
That's not my writing, it's an article by a journalist on the west coast I believe. Unfortunately I cannot find any information on tomorrow's press conference!!!!
I'll take that bet. De la Hoya usually rises to the occasion when fighters call him out. Vargas made that mistake and it looks like Mayorga has done the same. I haven't always backed De la Hoya but I don't like fighters who do a lot of talking. But I'd like to see Mayorga knocked out and even if he isn't it should be a good fight.
Considering that Mayorga es una lata y nada mas at this point in his career - that's not a wise bet, though Oscar is pretty much done too.
Mayorga couldn't even knock out Michele Piccirillo in his last fight. He hasn't KO anyone since Forrest. I doubt he can knock oscar out. Oscar is also much more skilled with quicker hand. So Mayorga probably can't win a decision either.
A clip of a local fight in Houston from last week, featuring former heavyweight contender Randall "Tex" Cobb's son, Josh Cobb. Entertaining while it lasted. http://youtube.com/watch?v=XhyyEu3YJ3A
Wow. That is way less "exciting" than it sounds from the transcript. I don't think you should be allowed to make fun of somebody if you have to stop every 6 words to have it translated.
I went to it today. It was supposed to start at 10:30 at Jones Hall but De la Hoya didn't get there until around 11. Lasted about 30 minutes. Mayorga talked a lot of **** and they got in each others faces. People seperated them before nay punches were thrown. Actually, Mayweather Sr. and a guy from Mayorga's camp got into it because the dude called Mayweather the ugliest person ever. They had to get someone to stop Mayweather from talking. Funny thing is, Mayorga is a super cool dude. Signed autos afterwards for about 15 minutes. Oscar signed a lot too. The dude from the Contender was there (that cocky baby faced dude who got his ass kicked by Ishe Smith after running his mouth the whole show). Looked like a puss in person. Don King was kind of a prick.
Not to derail the thread, but where is there in Houston to see boxing live? I am not talking about 2 guys just fighting for the hell of it, I mean real professional boxers.
Browning Boxing will apparently be back sometime this year. A new Houston promoter has a card coming up soon: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3670115.html
This fight took place in Humble Civic Center. There hasn't been a significant fight in Houston since Juan Diaz and Rocky Juarez fought in Reliant Stadium in July 2004 on an HBO card.
Another wild press conference in Chicago! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mayorga's vicious verbal attack! March 2, 2006 By Jacob Chavez The only nice thing Mayorga had to say was “Hello” to those present and thank them for coming out. He then immediately grabbed the microphone and looked at De La Hoya and proceeded to point his finger straight at him. “I know you all love Oscar De La Hoya… I love him too, that is why I am going to bring him to you all in a body bag.” With that, the predominantly De La Hoya crowd booed with disapproval. Ironically, Mayorga felt he needed De La Hoya to respect HIM! He clearly reminded the “Golden Boy” that it was in Chicago that he won his championship and in Chicago he must be respected. He also accused Oscar of taking a dive when getting KOed by Bernard Hopkins during their fight in September of 2004. “I don’t want to hear any excuses from you," Mayorga stated. "I don’t want you to later say that your toe hurts or you injured a rib or a shoulder.” Mayorga then started a scuffle by the slapping the back of De La Hoya’s head. After order was resumed, Nicaraguan fighter continued his vicious taunting. "You have no balls, you f*****, I’m going to bring you back to my home and put in my bed and make you my b****. You claim to represent your people? I just smacked you in the back of the head and you did nothing. Tell your wife to cook you some eggs every morning so you can grow some balls." De La Hoya needed to be calmed by his trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. just before speaking. Oscar took the podium and simply stated “All bark, no bite." The crowed cheered with excitement. “I am not going to talk bad… I am going to knock you out," continued Oscar. "You disrespected my people, my wife, and my family and I am going to knock you out”. Mayorga not willing to give up the spotlight began screaming at De La Hoya across the table. De La Hoya motioning with his hand, “ Yeah, yeah, yeah, all you like to do is talk. You talk so much you remind me of Don King.” With not much more said, De La Hoya made it clear that he has never been so pumped up for a fight if his life and he plans to knock Mayorga out. http://www.fightnews.com/hoffman161.htm
