Weis' moves add core, and some not so wise

More than a third of the way through the NBA season, most teams have a read on how their off-season moves have worked out.

Magic General Manager John Weisbrod acquired 12 players through the draft, trades and free agency.

Here's his hits -- and misses:

    The Tracy McGrady trade: Hit.

Nobody gets three quality starters when dealing a superstar, but Weisbrod wrangled them from Houston. Losing T-Mac could haunt, but Steve Francis, Cat Mobley and Kelvin Cato have provided the framework for a resurgence.

His move to unload Juwan Howard's six-year contract was shrewd. Ty Lue is now in Atlanta. Reece Gaines is so far at the end of the Rockets' bench that he's in Amarillo.

Keith Bogans for Brandon Hunter: Miss.

Big whiff, actually. Bogans has played well in Charlotte. Hunter looks good in practice, but so do the trainers. Bogans was jettisoned after Weis couldn't move DeShawn Stevenson.

Re-signing Stevenson to a three-year deal: Miss. Stevenson can help some team -- just not this one.

Drew Gooden, Steven Hunter and Anderson Varejao for Tony Battie and two-second round picks: Hit. A double off the wall.

Gooden has replaced Carlos Boozer to star in Cleveland. Just remember: It wouldn't have worked here. Battie is a tough, classy pro. A roughhouse guy like Varejao, though, is what the Magic lack. Steven Hunter never developed.

Exposed Zaza Pachulia in expansion draft: Miss. See Varejao.

Signed Hedo Turkoglu as a free-agent: Hit. Big hit. Best use of midlevel exception.

Signed Stacey Augmon as a free agent: Hit, albeit a soft single. Augmon makes defensive cameos.

Signed Mario Kasun and Michael Bradley as free agents: Hit and a miss, respectively. Kasun has been physical. Bradley is back on phony injured list.

Picked Dwight Howard over Emeka Okafor in NBA Draft: Hit.

I thought Okafor could have helped the Magic more immediately. Still think that, but a gamble on Howard's future will pay off. Patience, folks.

Gave Denver a future first-rounder to pick Jameer Nelson: Miss. So far, anyway.

Nelson has had his moments. If he were wowing the Magic, they wouldn't be searching for a third point guard.

Signed Johnny Davis to replace Doc Rivers: Hit -- and myth. The myth is that if Davis were truly Weisbrod's guy, he would have received more than a trial run.

TMac for three starters? Oh, he considers KC a starter? And, will Cat walk without compensation (no SnT, that is)?

I still love Stevie, like Cat (a lot) but, folks, this deal was a HIT - in Roxland!

It was a hit for the Rox and the Magic

The Magic are a much better team then last year.

True. Did the return of GHill + the #1 pick overall + MLE signing contribute to that? Or just eliminating TMac and adding Stevie et al?

LOL, this is exactly what goes through my head all the time when I read about how much better the Magic are. I think the trade made some difference, but not nearly as much as the ones listed above.

It was more like 2 starters for McGrady

Yep, but people seem to overlook those facts everytime this trade has been brought up.

I go as far as to say that if G. Hill was healthy last year, T-Mac would not be Houston right now.

Since when does nobody get 3 quality starters for a superstar? I think it's more likely that any team with a superstar would not trade him for 3 quality players.

Also, when 2 of those players are Cat and Steve, you can say goodbye to smart, fundamental ball on your team.

We got 3 quality players in return.

I don't know how you guys look at this thing here; tmac is a top 7 in the NBA, lue turned into Jon Barry for us and Juwan Howard has been a solid 4 for us. In fact his stats is comparable 'arguably' favorable to that of Cato's. Orlando Magic is unlikelu to resign Mobely next season. So what good is Mobley really to them if they cannot resign him or trade him for a quality pass-first PG?

We hit an inside the park homer on this deal as far as I am concerned.

Check Juwan V Cato stats PER 48 MINUTES (2004-05 season)

Not that much of a sharp drop of to Cato's

Fegwu, the difference in the stats for Cato and Howard is that Cato has been much more consistant, while Howard has not been. Further, Cato is a center, whereas Howard is a power forward; there are many fewer centers who will give you those kind of stats compared to power forwards (of which about 25 could give you those stats).

Put it this way -- alongside Yao, which would you rather have? If the Rockets had both Cato and Howard, Cato would be the starter, hands down, despite being a tad slow to guard PF on the perimeter.

I'd rather have Howard at the PF besides Yao

nevermind...I thought we were talking about Dwight:p

    I'd rather have Cato then

But Cato cannot or at least could not knock down 12 - 15 footers. That ability is vital to us. We could use a defensive bruiser and good rebounder like him but he has holes in his offense. Even Deke has a better offense than Cato fundamentally speaking. Cato FG mostly comes from dunks or put backs.

    Juwan has averaged the following in the last five games;

If he can continue on that track, I will take him as our 4 anytime over Cato.

This makes the trade a HR for us imho.

Cato is a better PF to have next to Yao if your perimeter defenders are Francis and Mobley.

Howard is better PF to have if your perimeter defenders are TMac and any one of Sura, Barry, or Wesley. And if you're trying to spread the floor for drives and keeping double teams distant.
