http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/07/15/magic-to-keep-jj-redick-by-matching-offer-from-bulls/ Magic matches to keep JJ in the fold.
Good move by the magic.... JJ to the bulls isn't what makes them great team....but he sure would have helped out..
where the hell are they getting all this money from? If I'm not mistaken, they are now 15 million dollars over the tax. I seriously thought they were gonna let him walk after signing Q-Rich.
Their payroll was at 83 mil before, add in 7 mil for Redick and whatever they pay Q rich and the Magic will pay 20 mil in luxury tax. They are trying to get rid of Bass and Gortat, but even if they do get rid of those 2 they will still be taxed for Redick. Paying 14 mil for Redick, is that really a smart move?
The Magic management is notorious for dragging out the status of their RFA's. Case in point, Marcin Gortat.
If their willing to get rid of Marcin Gortat, why don't we just offer them cap relief like Alexander Johnson, Mike Harris and some cash considerations?
We can't, the salaries have to be within 25% (?) since we are over the cap. A team like the OKC Thunder could fit him in since they are under the cap. I don't know if they would want to because Gortat isn't an expiring contract, he's going to be a high salary guy for a while.
Orlando doesn't really care too much about cap relief. (Honestly, the luxury tax is a vestigal system that only hinders the chances of the non multi billionaire or megamarket teams)
We did the same thing to Carl Landry a couple years ago. In the time frame the original team has to match it, the team that signed the player has their money tied up and cannot use it on another player. By waiting the full time to match, a GM can say "F you" to the other club and then match it at the last minute. It prevents them from going after anyone else for a week. With Lowry, we matched quickly. The reasoning was probably twofold. The first being Cleveland had just had a public display of LeBron pooping all over the entire city and Morey felt bad for them. And two, it frees up that money so they can be competitive in free agency against the Knicks to make our picks look better. I'm guessing it is probably more of the latter.
That team will be competitive as long as Howard and Nelson are together, but man ... they have some bad contracts and I don't like the looks of them going forward. Reddick isn't a terrible contract, but with Gortat, Rashard, and Vince Carter, they are stuck with that core for a while. Better hope Vince has enough in the tank to perform and keep their title hopes alive.
redick is my favorite non-rocket player. finally gettin his pay day  hes getting better each year and he fits in perfectly with the magic. i just wish he would get more look son offense. Vince Carter is trash, give JJ the start at shooting guard.
Need a salary dump... how bout find a team with some cap space... send david anderson and 3 mill (specially with his non guarantee contract) to that team...we get gortat and we send either 2012 1st pick of ours (not knicks)...or maybe we can send them marty lenuen and alexander guy or something... but anyway sounds like opportunity...time to talk to our good friends the kings.
