ORLANDO, Fla. -- The father of the 12-year-old boy bumped by Celtics big man Glen "Big Baby" Davis after Sunday's game-winning shot is demanding an apology.

Ernest Provetti told the Orlando Sentinel that he wrote the NBA office demanding an apology from Davis for acting like a "raging animal with no regard for fans' personal safety." NBA spokesman Tim Frank confirmed the league received the e-mail but declined to comment on it.

Video of the play shows Davis ducking behind a referee and stepping out of bounds as he ran back to the Celtics bench. Provetti told the paper it was his son, Nicholas, whose hat fell off as Davis bumped him.

Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said Davis was not available for comment. The Magic also declined to comment.

Perhaps, but it was flat-out stupid. I mean, he consciously ran out of bounds, and pushed the kid (a huge NBA player's forearm vs a 12 year old isn't pretty)... It was stupid, and he should apologize.

Haha.. if you can't take a hit when you're sitting courtside, then you don't belong there... lol they actually had a segment on this on PTI, it was hilarious.

I am not trying to defend Davis in any way but that looked like a complete accident caused by a player who just hit the biggest shot of his basketball career. I actually lauged about it and rewinded the game a few times to see the incident.

Nobody got hurt. These people should understand the inherent risks that go hand-in-hand with the privilege of sitting courtside at an NBA game. I hate to say it but the father is just whining. If he is that worried about his kid's feelings or safety, he should stop bringing the kid that close to the action. That, or go watch chess matches up close. As far as I know, there has never been a kid accidentally hit by an exuberant chess winner.

I'd be embarrassed if I was that guy's kid.

I agree there is a risk for courtside seats. But you don't push a kid. All he's asking for is an apology to his son.

I agree that a player should never push a kid, or a woman, or any fan for that matter... intentionally.

Is there any evidence that Davis did it inentionally? I watched the replay several times last night and saw aboslutely zero evidence of that. It didn't even look like he saw the kid who seemed to be screened by his father.

It would have been better if he had said.. "raging animal with no regard for human life". :D

I bet Kevin Harlan would have appreciated that.

Unintentional shoves deserve an apology. If it was intentional, there would be no need to apologize and would show Big Baby is a d-bag for wanting to pick on little kids.

When you said "but you don't push a kid," you seemed to be implying he did it intentionally.

If not, were you saying that accidents should never happen when some fans are sitting inches from the action?

If the father or the kid or both feel that bad about a minor accident that occurred as a result of their choice to sit courtside, and an apology will allow them to continue forward with their lives after such an unbelievably tragic incident (kid losing his balance temporarily and getting his hat knocked off  ), I guess it couldn't hurt for Davis to go ahead and say he's sorry...

    Laughable.

I hope the league stands by Davis, but I doubt it will.

I'm saying you don't push a kid, intentionally or unintentionally. Accidents happen and when they do, you apologize. Simple as that.

It would be one thing if you were arguing that you should never push a kid and fail to apologize but that isn't what you seem to be saying. You're also saying that accidents should never happen when fans are inches from the court. You also seem to be assuming Davis was even aware at the time that he shoved the kid.

I don't even agree that Davis needs to apologize. I would fully understand as a father if a pro player unintentionally bumped into my kid when we sat that close to the action.

If the kid was laying in a pool of blood after the accident, I doubt Davis would have been unsympathetic or unaware of what occurred. As is, the kid got shoved slightly and his hat fell off. Big deal. The father should get over it and stop whining. I assume Davis wasn't even aware of what happened until long after he left the court. My guess is that Davis will be more than willing to apologize to the whiny father and his son.

Whether intentional or not, I thought it was pretty classless for him to shove the kid and to not even apologize. Shoot it doesn't even matter if it was a kid or not. And it doesn't matter if it's courtside or not. That type of shove in that situation, was just uncalled for. He could have just as easily slid by the kid without laying a hand on him.

It's one thing to get toppled by a player diving for a loose ball; now that's a story to tell. It's something entirely different to get needlessly shoved out of the way, by an opposing team's player no less, as he's running down the court. Would have an "excuse me" or "watch out" have hurt? It's just common courtesy. And maybe he didn't realize what happened. I can understand that. He just hit the game winning shot; he's caught up in the moment. So now that you know what happened, do the decent thing and send him a signed jersey or something and an apology.

I'm not sure if you read the second part of my post you quoted. Here it is again.
As I said, accidents do happen. Shaq has bulldozed into the crowd trying to save possessions, and when he does hit someone, he usually gives them a pat on the head or back. Did he mean to hit someone? No, he was just trying to save the ball as it was heading into the crowd.

That's where I disagree. He shoved someone's kid, and nobody should do that. When I nudge someone when in a crowded area, I turn my head and say sorry. It's just manners.

I agree it shouldn't have required media attention. I would have apologized in the postgame after being told I shoved a kid, even if I have no recollection of it in all the celebration. Unfortunately, Big Baby doesn't seem to have that kind of initiative and it has gotten this big.
