SPOILER ALERT: I spoke to a source to tells me Damon Stoudamire isn't going to Houston or Cleveland and will likely agree to terms with a mystery team sometime in the next 72 hours unless the Blazers get involved in a sign and trade.

Take it for what it is worth.

    OOoooooOOO! 'Mystery Team'!

I won't hold my breath on this, although it would be a good thing in my eyes- I've never thought that DS was a good fit for us.

At least he says we should know by next week. Whats plan B Gary Payton, its going to be tough trying to find a young athletic point for 1.5M.

Nash said he's willing to go to next season with Ruben Patterson, Darius Miles and Viktor Khryapa backing up Zach Randolph at power forward.

However, Houston offered Damon Stoudamire $1.8 million a year and also made a few sign-and-trade proposals to the Blazers -- including Clarence Weatherspoon, Nash said. Now, Stoudamire is thought to be ready to sign with another NBA team, Nash said.

Would Nash take, say, power forward Juwan Howard for Stoudamire in a sign-and-trade with the Rockets now? Despite the fact that Howard has four years and $26 million left on his contract?

"Our preference has been to not take a contract back if it's going to force us into tax land," Nash said. "Amnesty? Theoretically, that's something that could happen that would avoid tax this year. But it all depends on what's coming back in return."

The Rockets haven't offered Howard . . . yet. But with Anderson's status as a fifth wheel, amnesty is looking more like a certainty. Which means we sort of know how this ends. With that in mind, Howard for Stoudamire is a trade the Blazers might actually do.

So should we give up Howard to get DS? That would start DS at 4.7M a year!

We would need a backup PF now too.

No, if Howard is healthy I really think we'll need his mid range jumper next season.

    Maybe a threeway deal.

    DS to Houston
    Howard to Portland
    Mike James to Cleveland
    Drew Gooden to Houston.

Don't know if Cleveland wants to give up Gooden though.

The mystery team has to be the Lakers...

Howard isn't going anywhere with his health up in the air how it is... no one will touch him, look at Eddie Curry.

I think I would...i like Howard because he knows how to score, to have an experience point that can score seem more crucial now. We can always signs Lonny Baxter for a year.

I agree, Howard will be a great can't of pace subing for Swift.

No problem, never really sold on DS. I liked his outside shot and he is a fairly good playmaker, but drug violators are always a risk to reoffend. Yes, I know he is a great "community service" guy, but the facts remain. Because of TMac's earlier comments I expected a ST involving Wesley, but, NEXT!

I feel you, but let me ask you this....

whose mid ranger jumper would you rather have? Damon or Howards?

Especially if when can get Lonny Baxter in here for a year.

Yay. Please don't sign and trade for Stoudemire. Sura and James are adequate. Pick up an upgrade at the 2 at reasonable cost, or just wait and see what shakes out with amnesty. No new fat contracts.

if so, then where do we look next?

    I'm thinking Earl Watson.

But if not that, I get the feeling that we'll be waiting till midseason to prey on teams who are gonna throw in the towel and try to rebuild for 2007. It's a given we'll make playoffs this season, but if we can ditch expiring contracts on a team that's packed up shop, we can use the new additions to power up heading into the postseason.

Well, we could actually start it around 3.8 mill or so and use the +25%+100K to get it up there.

My guess is, if Portland is taking Howard, they are dumping some sort of contract on us, which would change those whole dynamics.

Personally, as much as I like Howard, I don't think he can be productive in all 4 years he has left. And a backup 4 is a lot easier to find than a lead guard (though Damon in that capacity is up for some debate). For example, guys like Alan Henderson are basically dime a dozen.

I'd rather wait for a decent trade for expiring contracts and just sign Jay Williams. We've already got a solid guard rotation and Head can get some solid minutes to reduce wear and tear on the geriatric.

No crushing loss in 98, no crushing loss now.
