Oregon panhandlers raking in the green

    By Associated Press
COOS BAY, Ore. - A police survey says panhandlers outside Wal-Mart in Coos Bay can make $300 a day. Inside, it takes a clerk a week to make that much.

Police say people who have a problem with that needn't look to the law - asking for money is considered protected free speech.

Coos Bay authorities say most panhandlers are not criminals.

Coos Bay Police Captain Rodger Craddock says most have lived in the city a long time and they actually have homes. Craddock says, "This is just their chosen profession."

He says most are docile, and that people should report those who are not.

Bob More, director of housing and emergency services at South Coast Community Action, says many panhandlers are there for the money - to feed their addictions.

He suggested a voucher system involving tickets people could give that are good for a meal or bed in a shelter.

$300, tax free* dollars a day works out to about $110,000 a year. Not too bad.

i have heard stories of people that have real jobs and then throw on some old clothes and make money on the side doing that.

personally i would feel very weird asking a random person for money. less weird though if i was hungry though i guess.

Sir, I don't think you're taking the clean up the forum initiative seriously.

Me and my friend were thinking about this the other day while we were driving. Seriously, these bums, homeless, panhandlers whatever you wanna call it can be some of the richest people on earth. Case in point the bum that holds a sign at a busy metropolitan intersection. He stands there for what maybe 5-6 hours a day. Think of how many cars pass by that intersection in just 1 hour. At least hundreds. Lets say about 200 on the modest to low side. And out of those 200 cars that pass by lets say about 15% of the people that pass by give them a dollar. Thats 30 people= $30 dollars. 30 dollars an hour x 6 hours. That's $180 dollars easy and thats me using very modest numbers in the amount of cars that pass by in an hour and low to moderate amount ( I think) in terms of the amount of people that actually give money.

I think Wayne Douchefino did a report on this a few years ago. He had hidden cameras following some of these intersection pan-handlers around after they packed up and left. Many of them would walk to their cars (parked a few blocks away), get in and drive off. I'm talking about late model SUV's.

That's why I never give to those guys. They probably make more money than me. Hell, I'm a musician...I KNOW they make more money that me!

I've also seen similar reports here in Florida.
