Embattled scouting service owner Will Lyles told Yahoo! Sports that University of Oregon coach Chip Kelly personally approved a controversial $25,000 fee that sparked an ongoing NCAA investigation and was in constant contact as Lyles provided the Ducks with recruiting assistance that may have violated NCAA rules..... very long article . http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ys-robinson_scout_details_deal_oregon_kelly_070111
Oregon is going to be devastated by this news getting served to the NCAA on a silver platter by Lyles. Should have snuck him another 25K in hush money instead of costing the school much more in the long run

A long article full of "So What" The NCAA is beyond ridiculous... Maybe they should start investigating how to create a real National Champion instead of enforcing rules that are being followed by NO ONE..
recap borrowed from another message board: The positives are that: (1) Lyles denies shopping players for pay; (2) Lyles denies Oregon (UO) paid for a specific player; (3) Lyles states Seastrunk was a USC commit until Carroll left; (4) Lyles denies that UO paid him for the Seastrunk commitment; and (5) Lyles says that in return for Oregon's payment, he provided scouting reports verbally in frequent calls with Oregon coaches. The negatives are that: (1) Lyles essentially contends that Oregon paid him to be a talent scout in violation of NCAA rule 13.1.2.8 which states: "Talent Scout. An institution may not pay any costs incurred by an athletics talent scout or a representative of its athletics interests in studying or recruiting prospective student-athletes. An institution may not provide any such person a fee or honorarium and thereby claim the person as a staff member entitled to expense money. Violations of this bylaw shall be considered institutional violations per Institution 2.8.1; however, such violations shall not affect the prospective student-athlete’s eligibility. (Revised: 8/5/04)" Also see rule 13.1.2.8.1 forbidding payment of costs of a talent scout. (2) Lyles essentially admits he was not properly providing recruiting services and Oregon knew that by their lack of receipt of written materials and assurance he did not need to provide any. (3) Lyles essentially admits he was a booster. (4) Lyles states that Oregon knew he was helping prospective recruits navigate the recruiting process, and used him to help effectuate Seastrunk's change in guardianship so he could come to Oregon (which is a bad thing if he was a booster). "Is any of the bad stuff as bad as paying for players or paying them after they get here? No. I don't think we're in USC land." ************************************************** ******************** REGGIE BUSH WAS PAID BY A WANT-A-BE AGENT. THE NCAA AGREED THAT USC HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. When Lyles mentions Chip Kelly finding a way to get him paid, it is much different and much worse than USC's problems. Pete Carroll was never part of the punsihment at USC. ************************************************** ******************** Is any of this stuff as bad as lying to the NCAA to maintain players' eligibility? No. I don't think we're in tOSU land. But we're likely facing punishment. I really don't think it is rational to conclude otherwise. The bottom line is: The one guy who can sink Oregon on these issues turned on us. Moreover, he was interviewed by the NCAA for six hours in May. This is not good math for us. Wishful thinking is nice, but the time for ridiculing those who think UO won't skate out of this appears to be over. We may get off with a slap on the wrist, but that's the best we can hope for now I think. The safe bet is that some punishment is coming.
Been waiting for this to happen. The **** that USC and OSU have gone through with Oregon just not getting anything earlier was a load of BS. They'll get what their fair share of punishment.
Phil Knight + Nike are involved in this Oregon crazy recruiting drama/ Houston street agent story now http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/or...f/2011/07/canzano_willie_lyles_tells_how.html
So tired of the NCAA farce. I'm very serious when I think the major, big dollar, programs should buck the NCAA and form their own collegiate superleague for football and basketball. Let them make up their own rules for qualifying players. Let them establish their own pay for play rules. Let them have a playoff they like. Let them soak up every last elite athlete that wants to go pro and doesn't give a hoot about a diploma. Let the NCAA remain for smaller schools and student athletes. I'm tired of the outrage over victimless crimes. I'm tired of the "shock" that athletes cheated on tests or had a joint.
really liked this article.... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...or-dummies/index.html?eref=sihp&sct=hp_t11_a1 when are people going to learn that cash is king. it leaves no paper trail. eff the NCAA.
I'm hoping for a minor punishment since we're first time offenders. I just really hope Chip isn't fired or forced out. Anything but "Bellotti ball" please.
