It looks like there is a good chance I'll be spending the next month in Seoul for work. The work is going to be rough, but given the fact that I'll be on an expense account and that I have already announced my resignation from work, I want to live it up some. I'll be there with a few people, one of which is a very good friend. Anyone have suggestions on things to do/see/etc.? Thanks
I was there last year, just for a short time, but Gyongbyokbyung palace (massacred the spelling) was cool, and the tour of the DMZ is supposed to be cool too. It's a fun town, you'll have a good time.
I've been there...We stayed at the Hyatt near Itawon (???)...There is a club at the basement of the hotel (JJ Maloney's ???) that is a good hangout...A lot of the locals go there...Itawon is a good shopping district, as in bargains...I bought a lot of stuff there, a custom tailored suit from New York Suits for a couple of hundred bucks and I bought a suitcase, etc...There is also a place called Hooker Hill, which, well, nevermind... The only thing I remember is that I didn't lik the kimchi (local dish) and the people weren't very friendly to american's...But that was in 2000...
I think that's where I'm staying. I've heard it's fun. As for Hooker Hill, I'll be staying away from that. My friend thats going with me is a girl and she has been too good of a reference for me to screw that up with that.
kimchi is hard for some to digest in that its a spicy specialty (and quality varies!) only eat meats with the words Bul : Beef Tae: Pork stay away from Kae: Dog! (not very common to see, but its still around) yes, as someone has suggested, look over the DMZ, since it hasnt been touched in nearly 50 years, quite possibly some of the most beautiful landscape in the country. some beautiful beaches in southern korea. if you wanna meet some women, they are all at karaoke bars it seems, so be prepared to recant born to be wild or wild thing or something.
how does it feel to be in the center of the target of thousands of artillery that can be fired at any moment? go to Lotte world!!! woo hoo!!! and try some dog, seriously, you're not a real world traveler to Asia if you don't.
the tour to the DMZ is great, especially the tunnels there a couple of great market areas... one old antique stuff and the other mroe modern eg clothes and shoes i wasn't there for too long but i thought the people were great kimchi absolutely rocks... thanks for the reminder will have to get a friend of my mum to make me some more... and love the whole cook your dinner at the table thing.... really like Korean food... even whatever it was a had at roadside stalls
Smeggy speaks the truth, I stuffed my ass full of kimchi and bulgogi and beer when I was there....although the aftermath was, uhh, hazardous!
good to see we agree on something this week Sam Kimchi rocks damn now i really want some.. might over walk across the city to find a Korean restaurant now and Sam with all the places you have been you gotta come visit and stay with me
Oz & NZ & Tasmania are on the list definitely, but first I need to take down China/Tibet, Thailand (want to train at a muay thai camp for a week) and maybe the Andes & Japan first. I wish I had discovered traveling earlier..there's a hell of a lot of places I still need to go!
I am living in Korea right now and Itaewon has a good night life but it is mostley foreigners. It is the only place in Seoul where GI's are still allowed to go for the most part. The better places for bars and clubs is Sinchon and Hongik University areas. All the young Koreans go to these places. There are about ten palaces in Seoul and I have not been there yet but I am told Gyeongbokgung Palace is the best. The War Memorial of Korea is really cool and Myeongdong is the big shopping district. Insadong is where there is a bunch of traditional arts. DMZ is a must also. And the Korean chicks are unbelievably hot. When I get back to America the women just won't look as hot. Have fun while you are here.
