All right, so I never really downloaded anything before but now that dailymotion has gone to hell, I have to resort to torrents. So quick question, how do I optimize my download speeds. I'm using bitcomet (I used to use Azureus but it was a memory hog) Are there any certain settings I should tweak. For example, I'm downloading something with hundreds of seeders and peers and at best I'm getting 50k per second speeds. I have a typical cable modem connection (roadrunner).
Make sure you have a port open on your router for the torrent app. Isue azureus and leave 1 port open, and with my wireless connection get speeds up to 3-400kbps. Without the open port I get much slower speeds, around 50kbps max.
Ok, can u be more specific? What's my router? the box thing on which the light turns green when im connected? Sorry, I kinda need the dummy treatment.
Ok more specifically, so I have a static IP on my router for some other reasons so port forwarding shouldn't be an issue but how exactly should I go about doing that. i have a d-link router and i went to the forwarding menu. Should I just set the IP address to my internal static IP and pop in the port that BitComet generated as the port that should be forwarded? I think that's all I need to do but I'm not entirely sure.
Try using http://www.utorrent.com/ and see if that helps. I used to use BitComet and it was fine for me, but I switched to uTorrent and I like it, plus it uses even less system resources.
Your router is the box that youre cable modem is connected to. I only know how to do this with a linksys router, I am not very computer savvy. I took me forever to figurer out how to do this, the terminology confused the hell out of me. So, hoping you have a linksys router this is what to do. type in 192.168.1.1 in internext explorer. type in admin for the username and admin for the password when it asks for it go to the applications and gaming tab. open up port 24035 and type in your IP address, then click save settings and exit. To find your IP address, go to start, then run. Type in cmd then enter. then type in ipconfig /all your ip address will be displayed. Again, this is how I do it using the azureus program and a linksys router. I have no idea how to do it with anything else. Sorry, hope that helps. When you download torrents with azureus then, the smiley face should be green and you should not have a NAT error. If you do, then something with the ports is still wrong
Search bittorrent, port forwarding, and the model name of your router. It's almost guaranteed someone has set it up before, and put up screenshots of the settings you need to change. Also, do not use BitComet. I'm not an expert, but some say it is a "selfish" Bittorrent client, and many other users/trackers will block BitComet clients from connecting to them. uTorrent or Azureus have better reputations.
I second utorrent. The speeds are crazy and the footprint on resources is smaller than Adobe Acrobat (for reference). But you do have to open ports that utorrent uses in order to be "clever". While you're at it, I would look into MAC address filtering and encryption if you run a wireless network. This doesn't affect speeds, but rather your home network security. The problem isn't that your neighbors leech off your connection, but that they have access to your home network. Anyone with some Google experience can learn how to do damage with that freedom.
I've found that the best way to get better down speed with torrents is to have better up speed. Most home internet connections are asyncronous (different up than down), and you are heavy on the down, probably something like 3mb down, 384k up. Since bittorrent is a tit-for-tat technology, you only get what you put out.
I'm having some Oink issues. I've done the port forwarding before (same process listed above) and used utorrent. It seems to be fine before I got to Oink. With Oink, though, it seems like I never upload anything, even when I leave a torrent for a while after downloading. I just never get any upload traffic. It's frustrating, because I want a good ratio but haven't encountered this problem before.
^^^ If you check any torrent link in their site that you up or download, it should tell you whether you are clever under your username. If you're clever, then it might not be an issue of port forwarding. When I see a single I like on Oink, I only download the version with dirty lyrics to minimize my downloads. I don't have the entire copy so I'm considered a leecher despite not downloading anymore. You might be having that problem. Also, keep your connections on at all time. I uploaded a file and only got credit for 2/3 of my uploads. Turns out I was disconnected from Oink, so it didn't count.
