    Okay, I have stared at this thing for like 5 minutes straight now, and nothing I do with my eyes can convince me those two shades are even CLOSE to the same gray shade.

    Hmm...this reminds me of an excellent Simpsons quote:

    "Homer, did you eat 64 slices of American cheese?"
    "I think I'm blind."

    well, they are.... if you take this image into photoshop and use the dropper tool and take a drop from each square, you will see that they are both the same. bizarre ain't it!?

    I don't understand this at all. How can the A be a light color and still appear so clearly if the square is the same as B? I can't take it man! Make it stop! Please, make it stop!!!!

    If you focus on the two squares you can see they're the same color. It's the contrast of their respective surrounding squares that's doing it.

    The main problem with the picture is that "B" is not supposed to be the same shade of grey as "A" according to the layout of the board (or am I missing something?). Regardless of the actuality, "B" is supposed to be a lighter than the dark squares as per a standard checker board.
