I was reading up a little on the upcoming offseason and came across something about the expansion draft this summer. Apparently, each team can only protect up to 8 of their players from going to the Bobcats. Looking back at the season so far, I was wondering who everyone thinks should be staying..

Obviously, the first to come to mind should be the starting five and MoT. But what about guys like AG, Nachbar, Pike, Padgett, and 'Spoon? I don't know what kind of deal the Rockets gave to Mike Wilks but am pretty sure Mark Jackson got a 1 year deal. Since it's not too sure whether they'll be around next season, I'd probably leave them out of the discussion (but that's really up to you all).. So what do you guys think? I go to school out of state so I only get to the Rocks when they're on national tv, so I'm hoping to hear from people who've been following most of their games. I just haven't seen the bench guys enough this season. I guess we could turn this into a poll, couldn't we?

I would definately put spoon on there to get rid of that contract, but then again, why would the bobs take him?

    Some parameters:
    • Each team can protect 8 guys.
    • Unrestricted FAs cannot be protected.
    • If a team only has 7 guys with contracts, one STILL has to be made available (I think Detroit will fall into this category).
    • Any Restricted FA that is left unprotected and is selected by the Bobcats is automatically turned into an UNrestricted FA which can sign anywhere.

The Rockets Protected 8 will most likely be
    • Francis
    • Mobley
    • Jim Jackson
    • Cato
    • Yao
    • Taylor
    • Nachbar
    • Pike

Padgett, Mark Jackson, Wilks will all be FAs.

Left unprotected will most likely be
    • Weatherspoon
    • Adrian Griffin

While Cato and Taylor have huge contracts I doubt the Rockets will leave them unprotected as they currently have more value in trades than giving us "cap space" as we are still over the cap.
And there is no chance we will be under the cap enough where it will be more advantageous for us to have cap space versus what being over the cap and access to the MLE will provide for us.

    I would protect the following:

    Yao
    Franchise
    Cat
    JJ
    Cato
    Mo
    Nachbar
    AG
    EP

It really isn't an issue for the Rockets unless we are going to go after top free agents. Maybe, the Rockets leave Mo unprotected to get rid of his contract? That would be the only big name that may be left unprotected. If you would of asked this question at the beginiing of the year, I would of left Mo and Cato unprotected.
