(Clutch, please move this thread to GARM if you think it would be better if there but I don't have access to make threads on that part of the forum yet)

Hello all, Long time reader if this forum.

So if you didn't know, Josh Smith and Howard grew up together in ATL and were on the same AAU team. Smith is also one of Howard's closest friends in the league. They have dreamed of playing together, but if course Howard wouldn't leave to ATL just to play with smoove because he knows they would still be missing a piece.

That's we're harden comes to place. A duo of harden and smith would definitely sound attractive to Howard - not just because he gets to play with smoove, but because they'd also be one Of the best teams in the West.

So....is the key to getting Howard signing josh smith first ? I know many rockets fans were hoping to get him during the trade deadline, but now we can still sign him in the off season.

*not sure if we can afford to do this without trading Lin or Asik , but yeah....

Thanks for reading and I would like to hear your thoughts .

(Forgive me for any errors as this was tupes via mobile )

has anyone here actually watched either of these guys play? they don't fit what we're building here at all. both have low basketball IQ and large egos. we've got a roster of smart and unselfish players who keep getting better. just say no to both. if we are going to make a run at trying to upgrade through free agency or trade, make a run at players who'd actually fit in (kevin love, LMA, paul millsap).

If that's the case then I don't want Howard. Smith getting paid close to max is counter productive

If they are willing to take a pay cut, I'm all for getting both of them.

Don't want either. Atleast not at the cost of near-Max salaries. Any further growth for the team would be stunted and Howard, Smith will not make Rockets championship contenders IMO.

yup. his immediate impact will probably make the team better (debatable), but for the long-term, he alone won't be enough to transform the team into a contender, and the cost of acquiring him would hamstring the rockets' flexibility. i hope morey is over his infatuation with howard, because he's finally managed to start rebuilding this team and it's working. we're the youngest team in the nba with loads of potential - don't go and mess it up by chasing overrated players.

And watch him struggle to run down the court? He'd be getting lapped getting back on D with the pace this team plays at.

    $13,668,750 James Harden
    $5,225,000 Jeremy Lin
    $5,225,000 Omer Asik
    $926,500 Chandler Parsons

Thats a little more than 25 Million in salary

Assuming the Salary Cap is set at 58 million, we have 33 million to throw around.

    Josh Smith
    Dwight Howard

We can fit both of these players into our rosters next year. and maybe even keep a few players already on our team. I'd say there is no gamble better than that.

    Thomas Robinson, 3.5 million
    Royce White
    Donatas Motiejunas
    Terrence Jones

are all on rookie deals and are extremely tradeable and also expendable too

Royce White still has potential and I'm sure we can pay someone to take him off our hands.

    Lin
    Harden
    Parsons
    Smith
    Howard
    Asik

That is a scarily monstrous lineup.

    Then

what about when we have to re-sign chandler? re-sign lin? asik?

a 3 max player model will be great. sure. but say goodbye to any depth.

If any team is able to have 6 players on the court, then of course it would be a scarily monstrous lineup. ;)

The cap hit is averaged for Lin and Asik, so it's $8 million instead of $5 million for both. Plus, you have to wonder about the spacing issue with Josh Smith and Dwight Howard, since Smith is bad at jumpers and Howard has done poorly when not playing with stretch-4's.

Your scenario only works because everyone on the Rox except for Harden/Lin/Asik are on rookie contracts. Parsons will cost money, Delfino will cost money, everybody else you see on the team will cost money in 1-3 years.

Having 3 max players will NEVER be feasible in the new CBA, unless you have an owner willing to go well over the cap and pay massive lux tax. Look at Miami, they have 3 guys making the "new" max in the CBA and the rest are rookie deals or vet mins. The days of having a big 3, and then Rondo and Perkins are gone. If you have 3 guys then they have to carry 90% of the workload, and I just don't think Howard and SMith are good enough to carry that kind of load. Hell DHoward can't even bring LA to the playoffs with Kobe, Nash, Gasol and Metta.

Then he would've been in ATL by now.... And no I don't want Smith.

Why is everyone assuming Josh Smith will get a max contract? A max contract for him would be 30% of cap, which would be something like $17m+ in the first year. So, yeah, if he's getting the max, I'd pass. But, I'm not convinced he will.

Not sure whether this is meant as sarcasm  or has really low views on both Smith and Howard.

The odds of Dwight coming to Houston are still low. To increase those odds significantly will require quite the sales job from Morey, a sales job that would involve Morey and Harden recruiting both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard together. Dwight still dreams about playing with Chris Paul...a whole lot more than he dreams about playing with Josh Smith and the opportunity to play with both Paul and Harden with him being the dominant front-court guy may be what causes him to turn this way.

I don't get this fascination for Dwight Howard. What are you going to get him for? To provide more defense at the center position when you've already got Asik? Do people realise that there are more offensively skilled big men on our own roster?
