Hypothetically speaking, if Mr. Van Gundy (the disciplinarian) happens to fill our coaching vacancy, doesn't meet the high expectations set upon him, and is released (or decides to leave) down the road, does anyone foresee the Rockets constantly alternating between coaches with milder to hardline personalities, similar to what the Astros have done over the past couple of years? I know we're talking about two different sports, two different owners, etc., but it's something to think about. I truly hope the Rockets never get to such a point though.
You don't understand. See, living in Houston and working with great talent and people will make Jeff Van Grumpy Jeff Van Chancellor! And live happily ever after in ChampionshipLand.
ChampionshipLand meaning SUGAR LAND! When Jeff Van Gundy comes down to see the "schools and homes", CARROLL, be sure to show him Sugar Land!!!!! That will seal the deal! Don't worry about the future! Just watch the Rockets gradually progress and improve!!!! It will be lovely! And if he does quit or is released...well....WE STILL GOT RUDY! Maybe some other coaches will be available...LIKE LARRY BROWN!
I wouldn't worry about this at all! If the new coach works out, great ! If he doesn't, it will be much easier to let him go than Rudy. There isn't any umbilical cord to cut!
bigbrothaj, this is actually a good question. the answer lies in the players and their progress. if you look at our current team, they are, collectively, very undisiciplined. if, in 3 years, they are still an undisciplined group, of course we'll look to bring in another disciplinarian coach. however, if the team is regimented but unable to get over the proverbial hump, we'll look at bringing in a rudy t type of "players coach." this was the entire reason, imo, behind getting rid of rudy. he just didn't have the coaching skill set necessary to get 100% out of this group of characters. the irony behind it all is that rudy was primarily responsible for assembling the team! in the end, i think we'll see the team taking on the personality of yao ming. usually, if you want to see the character makeup of a team, you can look directly at the floor leader. tim duncan's spurs are (with the exception of ginobili & jackson) a workman's group of players. blue collar. tight lipped. not much flash. shaq's lakers are brash, and a little overconfident (to their demise). i digress... at this point and time, it is imperative that we find a coach who can augment the teams plusses and minusses. our plusses are our youthful exhuberance and talent. our minuesses are our undiscipline and lack of fundamental knowledge. the ideal coach will be able to corral the exhuberance in a disciplined fashion. that sounds like van gundy or carlisle to me. if van gundy, or whomever, can do this, i anticipate him being on the job for a while. yao's demeanor gives me the impression that he can be the calming influence on the court, the "rock" to lean on. he would, in essence, be doing the job that rudy/dunleavy would do. it'll be interesting, and fun, to watch....
