So, I play in a regular poker group on Thursday nights here in Circle C....and it is a bunch of pretty darned good players...... One of our guys...just finished 7th in a big event in Vegas tonight and took home $106,000......and IMHO, he is not even our best player.... Man....I am happy for him, but now I want to go....... We play in a $100 buy in tourney twice a month, where top 3 pay...and 4th gets their money back. I money about 50% of the time....and so does the guy that won.....I can't wait to talk to him Thursday to hear about the experience. DD
I know you are an avid poker player and apparently a pretty solid one, but never in my life have I heard the term "monied" or "money" used for placing in a poker tournament. I read tons of poker mags, websites, etc...and the only term I've ever used is "cashed" or "cash". I know I'm being a nit, but I've just never heard anyone use that term...
That's a sweet payday. How much does it cost to enter one of those big money tournaments? Also how much did the 1st-6th guys win?
My friend is a big poker player as well. He is actually in Vegas in the summer and last I heard he was up 15 grand. So ridiculous.
Is this your friend, DaDa? Tell him I said congrats! Wish I was in Vegas playing poker right now. Must be nice!
Yes, that is him.... A lot of the guys in our group are doctors......He is a surgeon here in Austin. A great guy...he texted me last night saying,....no cut for me.....I told him I will get it back $100 at a time on Thursdays.... The tourney was $1500 to buy in, and was 3 days long.......he is a good player.......I am happy for him. DD
Trendsetters.....set the trends.....we don't follow others.....Monied is the new jellafied !! Out of our group, we have had 4 people money in tournaments, I got 3rd, another guy 2nd (I think he is our best player) and another one 5th...... The 5th and 2nd were in the same tourney.....but those we lower buy ins....like $100 in the daily tournaments. We have a very good group of players, we play a round of Omaha and a round of holdem.... This weekend I played in a small tourney in our neighborhood....$20 buy in....and man was I sorry..... Not once, not twice, but three times, I got sucked out on with trips.... The first time, I had K 8, and the flop was K K A.......there were three of us left. The first guy bet (he is a notorious chaser)....I raised 4 times his bet....the 3rd guy called (knew he had an ace when he just called)... The turn comes and it is a 5....so the first guy limps....I go 5 times his bet....3rd guy calls, and he calls..... The last card is a Q........the guy that chases goes all in....I call, the 3rd guy folds.......the guy had J 10...he called two raises of 4x and 5x......what a DONK..... So, I was hurting for chips......the very next hand I am big blind.....have 10 8....flop comes 10 10 J......only two of us left......I bet a little guy raises, I go all in......he calls....he shows 5 5, I have trips.... The very next card is a 5...giving him a boat.....MFer....I am out....can rebuy? Should I ...hells yes...... So, about 20 minutes later, the same guy who just beat me with his pocket 5s.....is pushing hard......I have 9 8 from BB and the flop is J 8 8......giving me trips again...he bets...I smooth call.....the next card is a 6.......he bets....I go all in........he calls..... He shows J K....I have trips he has 2 outs.......the flipping J comes on the river..... Never in my life have I lost 3 hands to suck outs where i was an overwhelming favorite.....I left grumbling......tail tucked between my legs...knowing I lost to weaker players. Oh well, I will get em next time. DD
DaDakota, You should tune into ESPN 97.5 Tuesday nights for "The Main Event" it's our poker show where people call in and get advice/ just an overall cool show on poker. Matt Dean co-hosts the show with Fred Faour. Matt finished 7th at the WSOP in '04 and knows his stuff. Just FYI and a shameless self promotion since I help produce the show / run the board for it.
My friend won a $10,000 buy-in to the WSOP in an underground tournament a couple of weeks ago. He's going to pocket $9,000 and use the rest to buy into a smaller tournament in Vegas. I really gotta start learning poker.
Per my post above, $10,000 for the World Series. There are 51 other, smaller tournaments going on in Vegas at the same time. A few years ago, a friend went to Vegas to play in a tournament, but just ended up playing tourists in casinos--he came away with $6,000. Drunk tourists with money to burn, God love 'em.
Thank you, although it was somewhat depressing to see how fast and easy it was for me to look that up, lol. I strongly recommend anyone who enjoys the game of poker to try to go to Vegas for the WSOP at least once in their lifetime. I wasn't able to go this year (bankroll management ftw!) but I went last year and it was one of the most awesome experiences of my life so far. Just being in the Amazon room with hundreds (maybe a thousand? not sure, but there was a lot!) of other poker players, you could definately feel the electricity in the air.
I just watched Joe Hachem go all in with AK against pocket Aces....and the flop was 10 J Q for a MASSIVE suck out. The luck part of poker is what makes it great and frustrating....... If you are a decent player you get sucked out on WAY more than sucking out yourself.... And that hurts. I hate suck outs...just now on poker stars, played a fish...trapped him with pocket 10s...he goes all in...I call, he has K 9........and a flipping K comes on flop...I mean he has 3 fricken outs....ugh.
