On the anniversary of Kobe's 81, I have to ask....Kobe's 81 or Wilt's 100?

    Which is more impressive?

    Kobe's 81?

    Wilts 100?

Kobe's 81; barely. Wilt lived in the age where post players that were above 6'10" would dominate. Players like Dwight Howard could probably get 100+ in that day and age.

Kobe does indeed live in the age where perimeter players dominate and get ticky tacky foul calls in their favor... but what can you say.

    I'd say it's a tossup.

Wilt's 100 is more iconic, because of the roundness of the number and because the lack of film has made it so legendary.

In pure basketball terms, I'd say Kobe's 81 point night was more impressive.

The Warriors scored 125 ppg and gave up 122 ppg that season. In that particular game, check out the boxscore:

    http://www.nba.com/sixers/news/wilt_boxscore.html

Final score was 169-147. Wilt scored 0.68 points for every point scored by the opponent.

Final scored for the 81 point game was 122 to 104. Kobe scored 0.78 points for every point scored by the opponent.

Both in completely different basketball eras.. 100 points is obviously remarkable but you have to look at the players and competition then compared to now. Both are unbelievable but I think Kobes was a more difficult and remarkable achievement, also considering how he did it and he's also a guard compared to Wilt towering over everyone and of course being the only black one on the court.

I don't recall the Lakers deliberately fouling the Toronto players to stop the clock in order to get Kobe more shots...Wilt pathetically had that luxury. Kobe's 81 were more impressive no doubt.

Neither, stop hogging the ball. At least that is what I would think if I was playing with them.

Kobe kinda needed to score 50 every night to win

    C - Mihm
    PF - Kwame
    SF - Lamar
    SG - Kobe
    PG - Smush

He also had 60 in 3 quarters a few games before his 81

Didn't they keep fouling the other team to keep getting Wilt the ball back?

First I'm surprised the OP remember this anniversary

But I'm gonna go with Kobe only because I never saw wilt's game and it was kinda rigged to have his teamates fouled just to give him the ball back

I watched the entire raptors and lakers game, it was crazy, raps were actually up by a lot, Kobe single handedly fought back and won the game for them

Rockets scored 81 points or less 19 times that season, we led the NBA there.

Not a big Kobe fan, but def give credit where its deserved, and I think Kobe's 81 is better.

    Bullseye.

I also watched the entire Raptors/Lakers game and Kobe's points came during a meaningful contest where the Lakers trailed most of the way. The outcome of the game was in doubt until very late. The Raptors really should have won.

I've read accounts of Chamberlain's game and it became a complete joke early in the 2nd half. The Warriors started fouling the Knicks early just to get the ball back and the Knicks responded by sometimes fouling other players on the Warriors to prevent Chamberlain from having a chance to score. It was barely a competitive basketball game.

durvasa said it well: The 100 points was more "iconic" but there is no doubt in my mind that Kobe's 81 points was much a more impressive accomplishment.

I say this as someone who dislikes Kobe VERY strongly.

    Last time I checked, 100 > 81.

i'd go with wilt's 100, that being said, if we're taking in external mitigating factors, neither comes close to jordan's 63/5/6

The numbers speak for themselves, Wilts 100 is about 19 points more impressive.
