The On/Off Court +/- numbers so far this season for the Rockets look pretty interesting. Specifically, they look remarkably similar to last year's, except Luther Head has a positive number and Mutombo a negative one (both these guys minutes have been rather limted, so much of it could well be coincidence). The sample size is still way too small to generalize too much about anyone's numbers, but they do give an indication that, so far, the team has tended to click better with certain players on the court--and those guys appear to be the same guys as last season, despite the roster shuffle and coaching change Thus, I don't think it is entirely useless to talk about them. It should be interesting to see how things go from here. http://www.82games.com/0708/0708HOU.HTM Tracy +6.3 Yao +3.4 Battier +7.5 Hayes +7.5 Alston +6.5 Scola -5.1 Wells -8.9 James -18.2 Mutombo -17.7 Head +4.5 Francis, in really really limited minutes, +15.5
Sort of a worthless stat as if you play with the better players you are going to have an inflated +/- DD
i didn't know mike james was having such an adverse effect on the team. im also surprised head is positive because i've been dismayed by his decision-making every time he's played. maybe a combination of head and francis would work, letting francis run point and freeing head to get back to focusing only on cutting/shooting. the dude simply should never be put in a position where he has to make a decision; other than that, he's still a great shooter and has gotten decent at finishing.
Everytime i check the boxscores for our games, i usually see negatives:S Maybe its just a coincidence when i check them though. Also, how can Rafer's still be positive and Scola's remain negative?? Outdated I'm guessing?
With all due respect, these numbers are pretty worthless at this point in time. In my opinion. It helps to watch the games.
I wouldn't have imagined it either, but he's shooting in the low 30% from inside the arc and is taking the third most shots on the team. He's been scary bad. Throw in the struggles of the guys that generally play with him (Bonzi has been terrible, and Scola, until recently) and it piles up. + / - numbers when it comes to the Rockets can be misleading in my opinion. Wasn't Yao-Hayes-Battier-T-Mac-Rafer the top 5 player combination in the league last year? I think when you play with two great players (specifically one in T-Mac) almost exclusively, you're riding (gravy training, to an extent) a mostly positive wave. We should be looking at how to make that wave bigger rather than concluding we have the right three with them.
+/- stats are how much you produce versus how much your opponent produces when you are on the floor. They aren't useless if you look at them with a critical eye. It can tell you which group plays best together offensively and defensively. Just because you are playing with two stars on the court at the same time doesn't mean that your numbers are going be inflated by them. One, no player is going to play all their minutes with the same combo on the court. Two it doesn't just show offense, but defense as well. If the other team scores 5 points as opposed to the 10 points your team has scored when you are on the court you have a +5 for that sequence. Blocks, steals, missed shots all contribute to the differential for that time period. Saying plus minus stats mean nothing, is the same as saying point differential means nothing. I think its best to look at them during the flow of a game... like at the popcorn machine. http://www.popcornmachine.net/GameFlows.html Then you see the +/- combination of units that we use in a game flow situation.
Its interesting looking at the most used lineups The most frequently (BAD) used lineups #2 James-Head-Wells-Scola-Yao (44 W%) -5 #7 James-Wells-McGrady-Scola-Yao (40 W%) +2 #8 James-Wells-McGrady-Battier-Yao (25 W%) -15 #9 James-Alston-McGrady-Battier-Yao (33 W%) -14 #13 James-McGrady-Battier-Scola-Yao (50 W%) -7 #14 James-Wells-McGrady-Scola-Mutombo (0%) -10 They all involve James for some reason, but he also rarely plays with the same starting unit Rafer does and when he does hes +3 but hes only played 7 minutes with them to Rafers 181 so it doesnt really mean anything. James best lineup is when the Rockets play small out there with Yao, Wells and Battier up front.
Totally worthless isolated stat. Cases in point... For more +/- data for different 5-man lineups, take a look at this: http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits.php?year=2007-2008&team=HOU It even offers the raw data in spread sheet form, so if you can determine +/- and On/Off numbers for different combinations of players and against various opponents. I agree with some posters above that we shouldn't make too much out of these numbers in the first month of the season. Strong +/- for the starting players is largely due to playing with the Big Two. But I do think that Shane and Chuck complement Tracy and Yao very well.
Adjusted +/- numbers mean more. Which by the way shows Mike James with negative numbers for 2005-2006 season and 2006-2007 season. I'm not even sure that Mike James had positive +/- numbers during his Toronto Season. Wait...just checked. Mike James had a -113 for the Toronto Season. He played in 79 games so that means he had an overall impact of -1.43 per game. This means that even though he put up a lot of points with the Raptors, it also means he gave up a lot of points, lost the ball, and missed a lot of shots and maybe got beat on defense. He still shot the same rate he did at Minnesota that he did at Toronto. He just played a lot less minutes at Minnesota. Which means that Mike James really isn't that efficient of a basketball player.
82games shows Mike's On/Off differential was positive in Toronto. Not sure about his adjusted +/- that year.
Mikes Lenovo +/- numbers were negative for the 2005-2006 season. The Lenovo numbers show the plus/minus statistic that looks at the point differential when players are both in and out of the game. This is a simplified number rather than the complex adjusted +/- calcultation. His adjusted +/- numbers from 82 games shows he had a positive 6.07 so you are correct Durvasa. I tend to trust the Adjusted +/- numbers more which means I have to tip my hate to you for pointing that out. Adjusted plus-minus statistics take into account everything a player does on the court that affects the game. This includes things that many other statistics measure, like scoring a basket, but it also includes things like setting a good screen, or playing good man-to-man defense which are difficult to track. Another set of effects that are often missed but are accounted for here are inter-player effects. For instance, if having a three-point shooter on the floor opens up court for other players and causes them to play better when one is in the game, then the three-point shooter will get credit for this even if he doesn’t take any shots. Adjusted plus-minus statistics are descriptive statistics, just like points per game, field goal percentage, rebounds per game, etc. Points per game describes how many points, on average a player scores in a game. Field goal percentage describes the ratio of a player’s shots made to his shots attempted. Adjusted plus-minus describes the average performance of the team with a given player in the game, taking into account the other nine players on the court. http://www.82games.com/lewin2b.htm Just for kicks, here is the entire list of adjusted +/- numbers for the 2005-2006 NBA Season. 2005-2006 Adjusted Plus-Minus Ratings By David Lewin The following table shows the adjusted plus/minus ratings for 2005-06 for all players, sorted by team and then rating. poprocks, no need to post the entire list, especially twice. The link was enough. And I'm pretty sure the Lenovo stat is purely a raw "on court" +/- stat.
oops..durn sticky computer keys! I'll just post the link next time as you said. Easier that way. "tips hat to Durvasa again"
These stats are stupid. How about we see some "+" more wins and "-" the losses. That's all I care about.
If you don't like the stats, fine. But saying that stats like that are stupid makes you look even more stupid. Before you see your wins and losses, you need to know which players play best with each other and that's when traditional scouting is inefficient. I wouldn't totally rely on just $ball, but +/- stats do show a good indication of the best lineups on a team, especially the adjusted numbers. If you don't care about these stats, then why would you even come into a thread like this in the first place.
