Being to the Greek press (gazzetta.gr) the faraonico market of the Pireo it has not still had fine: the leadership of the red Athenian, still to the search of un' small wing of international level, would have taken to information care all' former Miami Heat Ricky Davis, able to go in double figure of average for points realized in last the seven seasons nba. For how much l' fascinating hypothesis or, is from remembering like Davis, discreetly indisciplinato in its last currently free experiences and agent, was accustomed to earn advanced figures to 7 mln $ and it is not easy that, also the munificent Greek leadership, or in a position to assicurargli a figure near those standard. http://www.basketcentral.it/news/europa/eurolega/olympiacos_sogna_ricky_davis.html It's not in English so I did a babelfish. Didn't see it posted but it looks like the European trend is gaining legs...
That signing would smash the legs right back out. Its the equivalent of them thinking they are downloading a new rock album only to find its a virus instead.
This Euro invasion is really interesting. To see mid level players chasing money even in Greece, Spain, Italia, Germany or at the Balkans.
I don't think it's a bad thing at all if C-level talent and high schoolers jump to Europe. Things will even out, as it won't take long for these teams to overextend themselves financially. Especially given the return. It will also be neat to see if the increase in NBA talent in these leagues further strengthens the quality of foreign players in the future. Both in the NBA and in international play.
How many teams are/were they competing with for the services of Ricky Davis to offer that much money?
I'll be the first to admit Ricky has had his problems historically, but calling him a C-level talent is a joke. The guy has average 30 minutes per game over 10 years and over 14 points a game with decent complimentary numbers. He's a good player...had some attitude issues and doesn't let the game come to him as much as he should, but a good, solid player.
I don't get what all of the fuss is about. We're not going to run out of good players in the NBA. 20 years ago nearly all of the talent was homegrown. Nowadays we have lots of international players on teams. So even if some players went overseas, it evens itself out, doesn't it? That doesn't even take into consideration that the game being global produces far more good players than 1 country would. As for the exact topic at hand...LOL. That poor team. They probably don't realize what they'd be getting.
It says Ricky Davis is accustomed to making 7+ mil, not the same as offering him 7 mil. Nobody will offer him that much in NBA.
Isn't the fuss about the mid-level players being paid more in Europe than they would get in the NBA? Which means the NBA will either have stars or scrubs in their teams... Stern better look at increasing the rookie contract options. 2 years guaranteed then 4 years worth of team options with pay spikes in the 3rd and 4th optional year? 3 million Euros is better than the MLE. Exchange rate makes it $US 5mill and then no tax... This is probably as much due to the downturn in the US economy as anything else. If the Euro wasn't significantly stronger than the $US then I don't see many players considering it. It looks like the big money imght be available elsewhere, and the drawcard for the NBA might be 'to play against the best' - but who knows if that's still the case in 20 years. Maybe Stern should be looking to add 2 European franchises to the NBA? It'd make for a hellish road trip though...
It's true, he has been making almost $7mill - but nobody is going to pay more than full MLE for him. I'm just surprised that nobody has offered him that yet. (ok - perhaps they have offered, but he just refused...) The thing I find most interesting in the article is that
I know people keep talking about tax free, but when you hit a certain amount, and you're a us citizen, you will have to pay taxes. Also, by production, Davis is worth mle money. I mean you have guys with less production and make the same or more than Ricky.
Euro teams have to pay overs to attract players. Over here in Australia in our Rugby League competition, players dont just get offered a little more than they are by Australian teams, they are offered two or three times more than what they ould earn in Australia. The same applys here. I think rookies will be largely uneffected simply because Euro teams will be looking for name players that are well known. You might get second rounders looking to head overseas because they can make a career over there, but those players for the most part are at the edge of being NBA quality players anyway (Apart from the odd player here or there).
Oh God... NBA execs aren't the only ones making dumbass decisions.... Ricky Davis? He's gonna be a total regret **** for them. The sex ain't that good, the girl is crazy, and you get herpes. European teams need their own Daryl Moreys.
I guess I'm confused. Are you saying Davis is a girl with herpes, who's lousy at having sex? If you were describing the chicks in Greece, you are outta your ****in' gourd. There are babes all over the place there. Heck, when he gets a little time off, he can head out to the islands in the Aegean and lay on a nude beach, chicks running amok! Have you ever been there? I have, several times. Greece is beautiful, once you get out of Athens. Athens has incredible history, but the pollution is terrible. Oh, and watch out for the Red Athenian. The dude's a sex maniac!
It´s not tax free but "tax-free". The teams pay the announced salary+taxes. Announced salary is therefore "tax-free".
