http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/local/100609-Luck-to-leave-dynamo,-join-west-virginia [rquoter]Houston - FOX 26 Sports has learned Oliver Luck will leave his position as President and general manager of the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer to become the next athletics director at his alma mater, West Virgina. Luck was a star football player at West Virgina and is currently a member of its board of governors. Luck has run the Dynamo since the franchise moved to Houston from San Jose, Calif. in 2005. MLS sources told FOX 26 Sports Luck will stay with the Dynamo franchise for an unspecified length of time to help with the efforts to build the new stadium. Luck has not been available for comment.[/rquoter]
I don't know a whole lot about the Dynamo but if he helped bring home 2 championships then it is definitely a tough loss.
He's a great GM and even on the same playing field as Daryl Morey. Most of the Morey Maniacs will surely bash me for that, but anyone who has an idea about the Dynamo knows its true. His son is Andrew Luck who is entering his sophomore at Stanford as the Quarterback. He could be the first overall pick in two years or compete with Jake Locker and Ryan Mallett next year for fist QB selected.
ugh. i hate that this guy is leaving our community. beyond being very smart and a gifted leader...he's just a good guy.
A succesful move from San Jose, two championships, he got butts in the seats at Robertson Stadium to watch soccer, everyone that goes really enjoys the atmosphere at games... AND he got a new stadium deal done that's not just good for the team, but GREAT for the city as east of downtown is just a mess right now. Even if you weren't/aren't a Dynamo fan, you have to give this man his props. Can't blame him for wanting to back "home" and work for his alma mater. Good luck to the Dynamo in finding someone that can fill the man's ample shoes. Odds on Dick Justice using a pun in his headline about this tomorrow? My guess would be something along the lines of: Dyanmo suddenly out of "Luck" I'll take 2-1.
The dude walks among us fans BEFORE and AFTER the game every home game. He's a workaholic who loves the team. We will surely miss Mr. Luck. I usually do not say this to people, because I think it's all up to the person to do well AFTER they leave somewhere, but I'll say it because he is a good overall businessman and person: I wish him the best.
This is a HUGE loss for the Dynamo, for Houston sports, and for Houston in general. Oliver Luck, IMO, is the best GM in the city. Not only does he consistently find the right pieces to keep the Dynamo at the top of the MLS, he's got 2 championships to show for it. During the time that they announced San Jose was moving here and the whole team name thing, I was emailing back and forth with Mr. Luck about things and his thoughts. He didn't know me from anything and had every right to send me the stock "Thank you for your support" emails. Instead, he answered every one of my questions and actually went into depth about what his thoughts were and where things were going. We had long email conversations over the course of a few months and I'm nothing more than just a fan...a fan that lives 150 miles away and wouldn't be attending many games...and he knew this. I wish Mr. Luck the very best and congratulations on getting what would seem to be his dream job.
That is brilliant. See, Morey won't even take you serious unless you are a season ticket holder. He even said it himself. I could see how Morey wouldn't be able to answer every fans question, but that is a great first hand account of Oliver Luck on the job. That's MLS and this is the NBA. Of course I don't hope the Texans lose any time soon and do wish the best for Matt Schaub, but it would be pretty cool to have Oliver's kid as our starting QB of the future. Start the tanking now JK.
I would agree, the guy has found talent for the team all over the place. The Dynamo have lost a good deal of excellent players since they arrived and he has always done a fantastic job of replacing them. This is a big blow.
Oliver is a first class owner and an even better guy. I was fortunate to watch Andrew play football all through middle school and HS (have nephews that played with him) and you couldnt ask for a nicer family. Being a West Virginia grad, this opportunity had to be close to his dream job (gets to boss around Bob Huggins...YIKES).
