I just watched Cannonball Run recently, and I'll be damned if it ain't a hee-hollerin' knee jerk from start to finish.

Any others that are worth mentioning? (And I'm serious about cannonball. It was great. Terry Bradshaw, Orangutans, Dean Martin AND Sammy Davis jr.? It is a bad ass comedy.)

I also think this was the brain-child behing the video game series "Need for Speed."

Gator: an early example of Burt Reynolds' car movie. Sequel to White Lightning.

He'd reprise the role in countless films: Hooper, Smokey and the Bandit, Cannon Ball run, Stroker Ace.

Did you notice a relatively young Jackie Chan in Cannonball Run?

Face in the Crowd with Andy Griffith and Walter Matthau. Impressively creepy for the 1950s.

What the hell is this thread about? Movies that are 30 years old and good?

Nice call! I probably saw Jackie Chan for a decade before I realized he was the asian guy in Cannonball.

How about movies you missed, dumbass.

For example, I thought Bridge over the River Qwai, Bullitt, and apocalypse now were awesome, even though I saw them later on.

Is this a thought process that eludes you?

Good call. And I know we all tend to be lazy, but at least ry to find some teaser/trailer for what you recommend.

citizen kane should be mentioned at some point.

not an old movie, but i watched the kevin costner-robert duval movie 'open range' yesterday - that is one hell of an epic western and the gun fights in that one are some of the best ive ever seen - as far as modern westerns, im not saying its better than unforgiven, but its up there...highly underrated movie. costner directed this one too.

12 angry men is great, but the theater makes more sense these days.

The other is Costner's "No way out." Damn, that was easily his best movie.

And that picture? I don't see that playing well today.

I don't know if these are the exact titles in English, as I watched some of them in German.

The Maltese Falcon (and pretty much every single movie with Humphrey Bogart for me)
The Old Man and the Sea (Hemingway adaptation with Spencer Tracy)
Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio de Sica movie)
It's a Wonderful Life (and pretty much every single movie with James Stewart)

    Any Stan Laurel/Oliver Hardy movies.

Kind of wonder if he sold himself short as a result. Heard he was to play Sonny Corleone in the Godfather but for Brando not liking him. Wonder if he'd still be A-List about 10-20 years longer if he'd broadened his horizons a bit: seems like he was in the same league, fame-wise, as Hoffman, Redford and others at the time. On the plus side, we probably got a few more southern-themed movies and actors as a result. Certainly gave Ned Beatty some extra work.
