Has anyone heard when the Hakeem statue will be unvailed? That would be a pimp-a** ceremony to attend.

I heard he was going to check into whether or not it's against his religion. My guess is that it will be, and it won't happen.

I guess we could always make a statue of Scottie Brooks if Hakeem declines.:D

Personally, I don't think a statue of any basketball player should be built...

Yeah, someone mentioned that and that it may end up being a "wall of fame" for Hakeem instead of a statue in this Hakeem Statue Thread.

Why not? Great players become icons that are commonly associated with the cities they played for. There is a statue of Roberto Clemente in Pittsburgh. I know there is a statue of Michael Jordan in Chicago. I'sn't there a statue of Babe Ruth in New York? And then there are statues in honor of writers, presidents, mayors, civil leaders and any other place you can think of in which people find greatness. Hakeem brought us as a city our first two championships and he's loved by the city of Houston. I mean do I want to see tax dollars go into a statue of Hakeem being made? No. But if Les is paying the bills then by all means, erect a statue in the mans honor! He certainly proved to be great. I don't see why he doesn't deserve it. Hell, I doubt that arena would have ever been built were it not for Hakeem Olajawon, so by all means honor him there.

There's plenty of Saddam statues available. He would look pretty cool in a Rockets uni.

In Greenville, SC, the birth place of Shoeless Joe Jackson, they have a plaza, a statue and a major street named after him. But, that's a dinky little town so what do you expect? :p Seriously, at least Shoeless Joe is dead. I say, if folks still want to build a statue of Dream after he's kicked the bucket, I'm all for it. It's a little creepy while he's still alive.

Will the statue consist of Olajuwon counting money?

Let's not forget there are already statues of Bagwell and Biggio outside Minute Maid Park -- players that are *still* playing for the Astros, never brought in a championship and are not sure-thing Hall of Famers... And talk about creepy.... check out their facial expressions...

Are the facial expressions the same ones they have when they strike out? Or when they make lame ass excuses for getting beat?

Heh. Yeah, except they are bloated, excruciating versions of said countenances, frozen in time forever for future generations of long-suffering Astros fans. Who knows, after 95 years they may not win a World Series, either.

What do they bury 7 footers in anyway? Do you have to get a special coffin for someone that big.
