I have to give pasox credit for this idea (I ripped off his idea, heh). Yes, I know he is aloof sometimes and he doesn't have the head coaching experience like other candidates. Thus, there is a good chance that we are already looking at another lottery season as we watch a new coach go through growing pains.

However, there are lots of things to like about Kareem, IMO:

    1) He is VERY hungry to be a head coach for an NBA/college basketball team. I think this hunger would more than motivate him to perform at the highest level possible as Kareem would feel that he has something to prove to everyone, mainly his critics.

    2) He is maybe the greatest center of all-time, so who better to improve Yao's game than him?

    3) Something about him tells me that he would command respect and that he is not concerned about being "buddies" with the players.

I know that there have been suggestions for Bill Walton to coach the team (most of those, I think, were tongue-in-cheek), but this idea is along the same lines as Walton except that Abdul-Jabbar actually has coaching experience (not much though) and really wants to coach.

It is too bad that this is nothing more than a pipe dream, but I honestly feel that we cannot do much worse than him. But then again, after we lost Larry Brown, I have been pretty depressed about this whole situation, so maybe I am not thinking clearly about this one.

I could see him having extra hour practice sessions with Mo and Eggie.

With Walton, and maybe Kareem, "pipe dream" is the key here.:D

I want Kareem to be the big man coach. I think he's tough, demands respect, really wants the job, and has a lot to teach. I think he'd be a great addition to a complete coaching STAFF. He'd have a real chance to distinguish himself, and prove his value. There is a great opportunity to get big results with Yao; even more so with Cato, Eddie and Taylor, if we can't/won't trade them. Put the pot jokes aside for a minute...if Kareem can see and tell those guys, esp. Eddie, how to board and play effectively in the team game (Wooden style), and they do it, his reputation is made. Sealed. Delivered. It's a great opportunity for him. Kareem is a good teacher for Eddie. He's a good teacher for Yao.

I'd want a more experienced hand in the head coach job, and the top assistant job.

Anyone can post here wisecracks and smartass remarks, but it would be nice to see some thoughtful insight on why this would be so awful. And using bong references is not good enough.

Yes, Kareem lacks in experience, but who would have ever thought that Rudy would have won 2 championships when he was first hired? I guarantee you that Abdul-Jabbar has a greater knowledge and understanding of the game than Rudy. Plus, he is not going to be some money-grubbing b*stard like Gumby or Brown or any of these others.

It is called thinking out of the box, guys, and sometimes, situations call for that type of thinking. Not everything out there has a black or white answer. Some of you would do well to remember that.

Other than lack of experience, I would like to hear *insightful* reasons why Kareem would be bad. Maybe these reasons are the same reasons that were used when Rudy became coach over 10 years ago. At any rate, I am not going to hold my breath waiting.

Let me guess Walton is in tweety bird jersey and Jabbar is on red hot chilli peppers.

Kareem will never be taken seriously, you may be right about his credentials, but do you think any owner would take him seriously. The guy has been through bankruptsy, he's a Muslim who does beer commercials, smokes a boatload of weed, he has just defamed his name too much.

You're forgetting the awesome playoff run he put together as head coach of an Indian Reservation league team as part of his community service. :)

    Manny,

I mentioned in another thread that I thought Kareem would be a better fit as Yao's coach than players like Moses/Hakeem/Ewing.

I feel that way because I think Yao would benefit by working with someone who had a similar body type and played a similar type of game.

Moses was a bruiser type. Not Yao's style. Olajuwon just doesn't seem to be the teacher type. Ewing could probably help, but his style of play just does not strike me as being similar to Yao's (I can't really pinpoint the difference though; just a gut reaction).

Players like Kareem and Sampson have experience playing with a great height advantage and maximizing that. That and also you can see that Yao does some of the things that they do.

Ultimately, and this is going to sound stupid and far fetched, I am afraid of how much of Kareem's personality would rub off on Yao (Kareem was one of the biggest whiner's in NBA history). Also, and the fact that Kareem is an L.A. guy and has always wanted a coaching job of some type there concerns me. I would hate to see a situation where Kareem and Yao developed a relationship and when it comes time for Yao to re-up, LA comes to Kareem and says "Hey. Well give you an assistant's position if you can bring Yao here with you." Again, highly unlikely that would happen, but its definitely food for thought.

My vote still goes to Sampson (who has said he wants to work with Yao). He has no ties to other NBA teams. He has been in coaching since his retirement. He had height and skills very similar to Yao. I dunno, I just think that would be a nice fit.

Plus the fact that I am a huge Ralph guy.

I would not mind Ralph coaching. Maybe he could coach the big men and Calvin Murphy could be the head coach! Would be cheaper than JVG, and who knows, Murphy might be the better coach.
