He just turned down an offer Nov 1 from the Bobcats because he preferred a longer term contract. Which means next year he is a restricted free agent. Don't know what the bidding war would be but I think being from Houston prob gives us some leverage.. and no state tax in a sense. Imagine how unstoppable this team would be after one year under adelman and bringing Emeka back to his hometown. sorry if this has been brought up before.. I can't seem to find the search button.. url to article regarding his contract
Would be nice, but he ain't leaving Charlotte. He said himself that he plans on staying there, the restricted free agent thing is just a formality because they couldn't come to terms just yet.
Gerald Green's option wasn't picked up by Minesotta. That guy is a young scorer with a lot iof talent he will be unrestricted I will be very happy to pick him up.
Heheh I like the word wounded, sounds like he got shot in a battle. But he is right, I wouldn't pick him up.. another injury prone player. I think I saw Okafor once at the UH rec before his rookie season.
Options are always there, but if Emeka wants max contract, something Rockets wouldn't offer due to salary cap.
I'll stick w/ Scola and Hayes. How are you going to afford Okafor, Yao, and T-Mac on one team? This team is set....so far.
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=133078 Okafor/Scola at the 4 would be a killer. But I'd leave him alone, we should worry about resigning the Bonz first next year. Scola/Hayes is a pretty good fit for this team.
Okafor turned do 13 millon a year from Charlotte. There is no way he is taking a massive cut to come to Hou, and even if he did we couldnt afford it anyway.
How does the fact that he's from Houston or the fact that we don't have a state income tax change the situation any? Charlotte has the right to match any deal that he'd agree to with us, so all of that goes out the window. Restricted free agents can't give a hometown discounts. Let's say that Okafor decided that playing for the Rockets at $10m/year is what he wants to do. He'd have to sign an offer sheet with the Rockets and then the Bobcats would simply match the deal and say "Thank You" to the Rockets for saving them alot of money. As a restricted free agent, the only leverage Okafor would have is if he signed Charlotte's one year tender offer and then became an unrestricted free agent in '09.
Obviously getting a top five rebounder and shotblocker would be huge. Too bad for us there's this little thing called "money". Something we wont be able to offer much of and in the event that we did make a contract offer Charlotte would match it and retain him without thinking twice. I agree with Shay about keeping an eye on Gerald Green's situation in Minnesota. According to his player file, he recorded a DNP - Coach's Decision in last night's game. Damn, if you can't get minutes over Telfair, McCants, Jaric and Buckner then you have to be either hurt or in the coach's doghouse. All the same, he's still young, very athletic and has a nice jumper. Yeah, he's rail thin, can't play a lick of defense and looks lost out there most of the time but with Francis, Bonzi and Snyder likely gone at season's end could it really hurt us to take a chance on him if given the opportunity? I think not.
