Can a team convey to another team the right to exchange first round draft picks at any time over a specified period of years?

Specifically, what I am thinking about is the Rubio situation and his worth in a trade. I would think that if he makes it clear to Minny he isn't coming and doesn't want to play for them, and requests a trade, that Minny should at some point be willing to pull the trigger on a deal.

He was the #5 pick in a light draft. Minny obviously thinks he is worth a fortune. If he makes it clear to them he doesn't want them and isn't coming, requests a trade, what should his value be?

Rumor was we offered Battier/Brooks combination to Minny. What else could they want? Well, obviously they could want a lottery pick, right? So, if they felt reasonably assured that they would have a full chance at a lottery pick, especially when they could possibly wind up with that lottery pick in next year's draft (if we don't make the playoffs, since Yao is out, TMac is shot, and possibly Artest not coming), then there would seem to be some possibilities here. But Minny would probably want to weight the deal so they have the option over a number of years to switch drafting positions with us in the first round, that way, they have a much greater probability of getting high up in the lottery at some given point.

Is it possible to do a trade where you convey Minny the option to switch first round draft picks at any time over the next 10 years?

I'm not sure if it's possible, but I don't think either team would do that because it limits your assets, neither team would be able to use their 1st round pick in a trade for 10 years.

Actually, the team that is obligated to exchange the pick if requested would be the team on the hook. The other team with the right to exchange the pick would not be obligated not to be able to move their pick. They could forego their option to exchange and trade their pick anyways.

Lookup up the Eddy Curry trade to New York. Chicago had rights to swap 2 picks from NY which turned out to be:

LaMarcus Aldridge #2 pick in 2006
Joakim Noah #9 pick in 2007

Rubio is the desire of my hear right now and could put a smile on every Rockets fans' face put this such a risky move especially if we become a lottery team next year and hit a top 3 pick.

In order for something like this to work one thing must happen.

This can only be a pick for pick exchange no Brooks or Landry involved. In the Curry trade Chicago took some expiring contracts but we no have salaries involved here so unless Minny wants to exchange equal talent for Brooks and Landry they stay out of the equation.

Personally I think Minny keeps Rubio and lets him play in Europe. In 2 years time they will try to find more value for him when guys like Nash and Kidd retire from the league. Phoenix could really use him as the replace for Nash if they are going to go back to playing Run'n'Gun.

Interesting. But it doesn't address the specific question. How long did Chicago have to execute those swaps? And how long is allowed for this type of swap in the CBA? Could we give Minny the right to swap first round picks in any given year one time in the next ten years? What are the time limits that are acceptable under the CBA?
