I saw a guy do the same thing on a truck in the town I work in except he had his going through the back glass. You can get these units for less than $100 which is usually less than it costs to actually get your car/truck AC serviced and buy a converter for less than $20. BAM! Auto air conditioner.
If your compressor died, then can find good used one from car-parts.com for probably less than $100 bucks. Then you go find a mechanic you can trust to replace it for you. My guy cost $200 including the coolant.
