    SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT.

There, I've said it. Now, you have no excuse for not knowing it.

The far left lane is not for those of you who are too prudent or too afraid of attracting the attention of your parole officer to go faster than 70 mph.

If you are driving in the far left lane, puttering along at 68 mph, and you happen to notice a silver 1997 Honda Accord blazing up behind you at 80 mph, get your slow ass out of its way. It's not up to you to help slow down those darned maniacs who want to speed, and it's not up to you to establish the New Rules of the road.

There's nothing wrong with slower traffic using the left lane. That's what it's there for. Just, please, once you've passed the rusted-out 1990 Sentra that's doing 50 in the middle lane, get your slow ass back out of the left lane. Don't cruise in the left lane at four miles an hour over the speed limit; some of us are not afraid of getting a ticket and as such, want to drive considerably faster than that.

Now, this is not an excuse for bad drivers. Those of you who do 50 down 30-mph residential streets, or can't park your car straight, or think it's fine and dandy to cut people off or otherwise make life miserable for the rest of us-- I am not on your side. The only rule I have any interest in is "Slower Traffic Keep Right".

That is all. Thank you, and drive safely.

I hate that too. You should live in Clear Lake. God its bad over here on 45. Seems like everytime I'm on the free way some one is going barely 60 in a 70 mph zone. I pass em up and see its some 90 year old who can barely drive. I mean there is nothing wrong with 90 year olds driving, but use common sense and drive in the right lanes. Or if its not some old people, then its some dumb ass on a cell phone, or someone who barely looks alive. I mean COME ON use your head people.

Finally a topic where I can agree with Kagy.
    Armageddon is upon us.

Did somebody say Clear Lake? I grew up there and my parents still reside there so I'm around. Nice to see a fellow Laker.

I agree....get the hell out of the way. And I'm not just talking about freeways, either. Those of us who prefer backroads don't want two cars doing the sandwich thing blocking all others right of passing. That kind of **** pisses me off. If you want to drive slow, drive in the right lane. Even if your driving fast, there is always some a-hole driving faster than you. The left lane is for speed demons...stay to the center and/or right for crying out loud!!! If you can look in your rear view mirror and see noone and are actively seeing noone, then you can ride in the left lane but you better get the hell out of the way when someone is coming up on your arse. Stupid drivers = stupid accidents.

RM95: Oh no I'm not. You ask me what two pieces of legislation I'd pass if I were king, and it's simple:

    A) Cops spend less time looking for people doing 10 miles an hour over the limit on a six-lane highway in perfect visibility and more time looking for aggressive, angry, reckless, or just plain bad drivers.

    B) Drivers licenses become much harder to get. If people don't know the rules of the road or can't drive a car properly, let em take the goddamned bus.

    When I'm mayor, we'll see.

Anyway, my position here is simple. It is not up to individual drivers to intentionally slow down speeders. I know a lot of people think, "Well, you don't have any right to speed, you're endangering people!"

Bull****. If slower traffic keeps right and stays OUT of the left lane, speeders don't have any reason to engage in the kind of actions-- lane changes and the like-- that can lead to accidents.

Kagy, that was me. I recognized your car coming up and suddenly remembered that conversation we had long ago about whether Dream should retire. Knowing you were easily annoyed, I plotted to punctuate my argument with a little highway sabotage. Hahahahahahaha! Did you like the way I matched my speed with the guy on the right, leaving a hole not quite big enough to fit a car through?

    BK....true so true.

ROckets03....us CL people usually refer to ourselves as Lakers...no not Laker fans...there is a clear distinction. I grew up and rummaged around one of the first subdivisions in Clear Lake way back.... the one...the only...Oakbrook. There used to be noone, nowhere...you could see straight to NASA. Ah...those were the days. Now, it's a traffic jam and a cluster f**k.

    How about this rule:

DOnt pace the car next to you, especially if they are going slow. If your in the left lane and going slow, that sucks, but what is even worse is when the guy in the right lane (or all the lanes) is going the exact same so there can be no passing. For some crazy reason, when there isnt stop and go traffic, people in Houston like to drive in packs. That just pisses me off man.

    Traffic Question

If all 4 of these vehicles come to a four way stop at the same time, who has the right of way?

    A)Fire Truck
    B)Ambulance
    C)Police Vehicle
    D)U.S. Mail Truck

Most likley, if they are all at the stop sign at the same time, they are all probably going to the same place, a burning house or building or something.

SO, I say it would go like this

    1) Fire truck--the sooner they get there the sooner they can put out the fire and stop any more people from getting hurt.

    2) Ambulance--they need to help the people already hurt as soon as possible, bu tnot before the fire truck gets there to stop any further damage.

    3) Police vehicle--obvioulsy needed next for control purposes, to block off areas, find out who the culprit is,etc, etc

    4) Mail truck- Who cares how long it takes them to figure out that the mailbox theyr going to has urned down anyways [IMG]

Of course, you gotta sorta wonder why they would all be going different directions though??

I don't drive any of those four vehicles, so that question is irrelevant to me. [IMG]

Chill Brian! It's OK. You didn't give any specifics about the piece of crap neon or the Clairol-brained bimbette driver trying to be a pest. I agree, that's dumb. You made a sort of general statement.

Personally, I'm one that sticks to the speed limit in the city, because every time I don't, I get a ticket. I also try to stay out of the left hand lane except when passing. You are absolutely correct -- that's what you are supposed to do.

I have much more of a problem with people zooming up behind me (and others) and parking 5 feet off their bumper at 75 MPH, no matter what the situation, but especially when they have nowhere to go. I'm assuming you don't do that, but it happens a LOT here.

Except when they pick on me, Houston has doesn't have very much in the way of traffic enforcement on the highways. When there's not congestion, people driving too slow isn't usually the problem -- It's usually people driving too aggressively. (Except, of course, for the occasional bimbette).

Whoops-- don't mistake my swearing for anger. Sorry, shoulda included the requisite smileys and what not. I swear like Robin Williams after he's stubbed his toe.

The thing is, I literally cannot imagine someone disagreeing with me on this one-- I think that's probably why I replied as vehemently as I did. That woman this morning represents that three percent of the population that derives a great deal of its pleasure from imposing their rude manners on the rest of us.

I agree with you that a lot of people are overly aggressive in encouraging people to get out of their way. There's a right way and a wrong way, of course; you also have to pick your spots, in that at 5:15 PM, the "left lane" rules basically don't apply. There's too much traffic on the highways to expect the lane to be left unoccupied.

    lol. Brian, you're OK.

I agree 100%. The cars driving beside each other is especially irritating. People should never drive right beside another care for a length of time anyway -- it blocks traffic and creates the danger of sitting in someones blindspot.

Tell you what, I'll move over when I see your accord coming if you'll tell the police officers to lay off my mustang. [IMG]

    Heres a question I have-

At those 5:15 times, why does it always seem that the left lane moves really slowly at those times. I mean, shouldnt it still be the faster of all lanes in traffic (im not talking about blazing speed here..im just saying shouldnt it be creeping a couple fractions of a mile faster than the others.
I realize people are getting off from the right lane, but people are also getting on there too.

You guys know any tricks. 45 North out of the city isnt too bad to figure out what to do, but I was on 290 going towards Austin out of the city yesterday and couldnt figure it out. I was in the left lane, but then all of a sudden, the left lane just stopped completely for about a minute while the other lanes kept on moving along. People I had passed long ago came creeping up behind me and inched right by. It really angered me.

For those of you who are suffering from a little road rage as a result of the poor drivers of the world, you may want to think twice before sticking that middle finger in the air, cursing the hell out of the other car, pulling the old "you tailgate me...I tailgate you" routine, and/or driving like an idiot because your a one-handed cell phone prick. There are plenty of psychopaths just waiting for the right moment to pull their stupid gun out of thin air and blow you away. Case in point, here in my area...D/FW...somebody talking on a cell phone was shot at and critically wounded in the head by another car during rush hour all because he was driving like an idiot. It seems like every week there is a new case of road rage involving guns.

So, if you think your Mr. Macho, can shoot the bird, cuss out the prick in the other car, and get away with it...more power to you. But, if your numbers up, you may just get the lowlife psychopath who has no control and a gun to shoot you with...regardless of the hour of the day or the number of cars on the road. No matter how well I try to drive around others and "get out of the way", I refuse to let my anger get the best of me and get all pissed off and go over the edge because, in the end, it's not worth it and it's not worth losing your life. Only problem is no matter how careful you are, the other a-s-s-h-o-l-e is going to smash you up and put you in the hospital anyway. So, you basically can't win.

BK, I have no compasssion for you and your little predicament. If others don't accomodate your desire to break the law, too bad. It isn't my duty to make sure you don't speed? It's not your duty to tell me what my duty is. If you don't like it, you can tailgate me, but it won't get you anywhere.

    Boy, you guys are lucky.

Last summer, I took my girlfriend to Houston for the first time. Not only did she love the city and the look of the city, but the fact that they have 6 lane highways!! And the speed limit is 70!

You guys should be over here where there are 3 lane highways, packed with cars, and a 10 mile trip takes an hour. The fast lane here is 60 miles per hour. The only exception is when you are driving to Atlantic City and EVERYONE goes 100mph. The slow lane is 85. But that is just one major highway, at night, on a desolate stretch.

Brian, you wouldn't last two days here!! [IMG]

Good idea, BK. So good we ought to extend it to guns, don't you think? Just say the word, and we'll get that mayoral campaign underway. I could be the media adviser, and maybe we can get Jeff to manage the campaign.
