I'm making my list and checking it twice....got a couple of California friends coming to town in a week. They have never been here before and desire a uniquely Houston experience (sorry dudes...I won't be taking them to Treasures! :D ). So here is my list, so far....am I missing anything? They will be staying in the Med Center area and I live in SW Houston just outside the loop.

Restaurants - Ragin Cajun, Williams Brothers Smokehouse, Ninfa's on Navigation, JCI (if we dare), Denis' Seafood, Cap'n Bennys.

Clubs - Big Easy, Blanco's, The Firehouse, Kay's Lounge, Little Woodrow's, Mr. Gino's Lounge, Leon's Lounge, Jim Goode's new place, Roll -n- Saloon, Volcano

Sightseeing - NASA, Galveston, Astros game, Galleria

Museum district? Miller Outdoor Theatre? Zoo? May be too hot for that but that whole area is pretty unique to H-town.

Ginger Man in the villiage is always good.

Downtown at Preston St. on a Friday or Sat night is also always lively. With all the clubs lit up and the Light Rail wizzing by, it's kinda cool.

NASA is such a rip-off. I wish Houston could figure out how to make the "Space City" more spacey. Put a mock-up of the Saturn Rocket standing upright near GRB or something. How cool would that be?

Agh! beat me to it! There's also a beautiful rose/flower garden there.

Being plenty of water (possibly the spray/fan bottles) - those Cali people are gonna complain about the heat.

I'd also recommend dinner downtown - it's a lot different nowadays.

Already warned 'em and suggested that they might like it better in the fall or spring, but they wanted the "full effect" .

"unique Houston experience" and yet part of your to-do list is "go to Galveston."???

You could take 'em to the Muesum of Natural Science. Even if they're not into science, they have that Lord of the Rings exhibit going on right now. Me, I'm a fan of the Museum of Fine Arts. Say, how about the museum district? While you're there, check and see if anything's going on at the Miller Outdoor Theater.

Looks like most of the places you're going to @ night are in the Kirby/Bissonnet area? Might as well head over to the Marquis for some long island iced teas then, right? Oh, and after hitting up the night life, you should stay out late enough to enjoy a maragrita at Club No Minor/El Patio.

I'm definitely confused about your restaurant strategy. I think I'd be inclined to throw in places like Otto's BBQ (or Goode Co.) and Spanish Flowers for my Houston Mexican and BBQ fixes. Ragin Cajun's good, but it's a New Orleans style restaurant in Houston. Ninfa's ... uh, to each his own I guess. Cap'n Benny's is a good choice. But you combine that with Ragin Cajun AND Dennis' Seafood and I start to wonder if you're going nuts for the surf.

They might not get the "full effect" unless they come in August but they will get pretty close.

Also, if they're theatre people, you could do Alley Theatre, Wortham, Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera.

Well, I concentrated on BBQ and Cajun. Never liked Ottos, and Ninfa's on Navigation is the only one I ever go to (believe me!). Spanish Flowers perhaps after a night of drinking. Maybe Chuys. Might take them down to Little Saigon.

while you're at it you should at least swing by the de menil collection. it's one of the finest museums and most underrated examples of architecture in houston, hell, in the world. Af far as eating, a vietnamese place might be in order. finally, lola's is a total freakshow and is utterly houston. you really should pop in there for a drink or two.
