Double points for acknowledging the design team at the end. I guess sometimes pop music and brand marketing actually get it right.
Love how the scale of reactions gets larger and more intense along with the song. It seems like the room is pretty small but then they have crashing pianos and all those tracks. I read about a show they did here maybe 2005, the power went out so they started doing Shakespeare.
Trailed to page 3 and I missed it. Agree with the OP that Rube Goldberg Machines are awesome, and I loved them as a kid. I thought the one in Pee Wee's Big Adventure was cool when I was a teenager. <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IXuWgTEZGuo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IXuWgTEZGuo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
Saw this on attack of the show. They had a couple of band members. They said it took four months to film.
From the wikipedia page on Rube Goldberg Machines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg_machine Here's the first part of a 30 minute machine by Fischli and Weiss, which gets special props for its use of FIRE! I really need to see the whole video. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/GXrRC3pfLnE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/GXrRC3pfLnE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> The infamous Honda video, which apparently lifted bits of the previous video. The ad company had to pay an undisclosed settlement. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uyN9y0BEMqc&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uyN9y0BEMqc&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> And a Rube Goldberg spoof: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/HeANRQBz0Yw&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/HeANRQBz0Yw&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The video is really cool but it's not continuous. Those two close ups of the fire I believe have cross dissolves into different takes. There is also a flash toward the beginning that takes up most of the frame which could easily hide a cut. I mean it's not that big a deal but the whole point of the Rube Goldberg is that it's continuous. I could be wrong but I don't think so.
That might just be waiting for stuff to dissolve or burn. From Wikipedia: I haven't seen the whole thing, and you could be right. But their video seems pretty widely touted as one of the best Goldberg machines out there, so I imagine it's pretty legit. I'd love to see the whole thing and learn more about it. Kudos, OK Go. You've got me looking into Goldberg machines for the first time in decades.
Great op-ed I read last month about what happened with their previous video and further proof of the short sightedness of record labels. NYT There's a little more to the article, so I encourage you to click the link. BTW, this reminds me a bit of the Flaming Lips, from the song to the performance art aspect of it.
Video just copies the Honda commercial. No points for creativity. These guys know they make inferior music, so they try and successfully offset their unoriginal music by making memorable music videos. I know people who go to their concerts, just because they have cool videos. I'm not trying to be a music elitist here, but these guys are a one trick pony. But in the end, they make their paper and probably live in big houses, have nice cars and screw models, so that is all that matters.
