DeGeneres to star in 'Oh, God!' remake

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Comedian Ellen DeGeneres is getting a promotion — to supreme being. DeGeneres will star as God in a remake of the 1977 comedy Oh, God!

The original starred George Burns as the creator and John Denver as a supermarket manager tapped as a new prophet.

"Ellen is a strong comedian and she has always done material about God and questions about God," said Jerry Weintraub, who produced the original movie and also will oversee the remake.

Weintraub said he'll hire a screenwriter and director with the aim to shoot the movie during a break in DeGeneres' schedule from her talk show next summer.

Though successful on the small screen, DeGeneres misfired in an earlier transition to film with the romantic-comedy flop Mr. Wrong. She helped score a hit with her voice work on last year's animated tale Finding Nemo.

    A known lesbian playing God.

While I think Ellen is very funny, I see a a lot of people having a problem with her playing God.

    T-minus 10 until this gets moved.:p

I'm sure most of the youngsters in here never even saw the original Oh, God!

    I guess it was funny...for it's time.

I preferred Book II. Anyone remember that movie with Brooke Shields and George Burns? I loved that movie when I was a little kid.

I saw it, it has been years since, it was funny.

Some say that God is neither male or female, so she would fit the part perfectly.

Why is this remake necessary? Was this movie so earth-shattering that culture hinges on it being remade?? :D

she's an actress...no one can be God...it's just a personification for a movie. i don't think anyone here will have any problems with it. i sure don't.

You cant top George Burns playing GOD.......this is a bad idea. Come on Hollywood enough with all the re-makes and come up with something original

You really don't see the religious right going up in arms over this? I've seen both extremes protest over far less.

BTW, it may be a good movie, but didn't "Bruce Almighty" already come out? Seems too similar a premise IMO.

Maybe they will. To me, it's just a movie.

But I think we've been through this more than a few times before. Don't know if there were protests over George Burns playing God in the 70's.

The good news is NOTHING can be worse than her "Mr. Right" movie she made several years ago.

    Ditto.

This movie could be even more terrible than "The Cat in the Hat" and that is saying something!

Come on Hollywood - how about coming up with something fresh and original?

Perhaps God will take the form of an absent-minded talking fish.

If you can't find original movies at the cineplex, you're not looking hard enough.

Probably, but it sure seems like there have been MANY movies made in the last year or so that are re-makes.

So my hyperbolic post of before still stands.:p :D

Perhaps the rights to remake "Breakin' 2, Electric Boogaloo" were unavailable

    RM95,

Most of the bigger flicks are just remakes or rehashes of old stories.

Studios are unwilling to take risks on new ideas and are interested in formulaic type movies.

There are exceptions but man...we are getting a lot of crap.
