Anyone going to pick this up. I think he has pretty good messages to send out. Im not too much into self help books but I really like the way this guy puts things together.
lance from the 610 morning show was telling a story one day that he was playing basketball at some gym and this guy kept lighting him up with jumpers and lance kept cursing because he was so frustrated. turned out it was olsteen. the guy's muscle's are coming through his suits every sunday morning.
has anybody been to his mass at Lakewood? my ex dragged me to it back in the days, and to me, its not church, he's just a motivational speaker. Then again, maybe its just me
so there was none of this? <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5lvU-DislkI"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5lvU-DislkI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
My pastor yesterday was half defending, half ridiculing Osteen because of that exact point. He said, if you ever go to Lakewood, the real pastors sermon around 50-60 people, the thousands meet to listen to Joel's positive, light-hearted, motivational speeches, he's just more of the "face" of the church. I don't know if I'll read the new book. My parents will probably buy it, so I might, but I found the first book to be kind of boring and repetitive. Yes Joel, I realize I CAN reach my goals, because you tell me repeatedly that I can.
But see that is the key? Simplicity somtimes needs to be smashed in your brain a few billion times for changes to occur.. I told my wife the only reason why J. Osteen is this popular is because it's simple listening.. Very easy to understand from youth to the elderly... And with todays problems and crisis going around sometimes you just want to hear some comfort? And shoudn't church teachings be motivational?
This was the main criticism against him on 60 minutes last night. He's a motivational speaker in a preachers suit. He only preaches a small part of Christianity in order to sugar coat it and give everybody warm fuzzies. I have to agree with that. You don't have to be a hellfire and brimstone preacher, but you shouldn't go the complete opposite direction either. I haven't seen Olsteen enough to know how much he actually sugar coats things or how accurate these criticisms are.
He plays at the Post Oak YMCA, I played ball with him for about 7 years, before he was even a minister. He is a great guy.......I like him a lot. DD
He is popular becuase he is telling people what they want to hear. He tells them that they can get anything they want ($) and all of their dreams will come true, and they will be happy for ever and ever. Yay!
I like olsteen also but i have to agree with this. the only time i ever listen, he's telling people how to make their dreams come true. now some of that has to do with happiness, which has to do with christianity in some part, but it isn't christianity. nothing wrong with the overall message, just the way its presented.
I agree, he is a great motivational speaker, which is fine, better to hear that positive thinking works than to be convinced to blow yourself up to get X number of virgins.
no need for that, no one's criticizing christianity, just the fact that he's using it to say he's a preacher of chrisitianity when he's not.
Ugh. A "church" with thousands and thousands of members, spends millions and millions on renovating an old basketball arena, lives in a ridiculously large home, has a wife who is b****y on airplanes if she doesnt get her way. My grandfather was a minister so I guess I was raised differently in a more traditional setting.... Id rather go somewhere where people actually recognize me, preach about something other than what any self-help book can tell you, and a place where you can feel a sense of togetherness and unity.
