Not really a surprise at all, but at least they finally announced all the details for both moves. BTW, I believe the $100 drop on the 80GB is effective immediately.

Is the 40 GBs of storage the only difference between these two models? Well, that and the backwards compatibility?

It has fewer USB ports, and no memory card ports. I think that's about it, at least as far as the negatives go (some reports say it is quieter, but I don't know about that).

Well, the 80GB PS3 has MotorStorm bundled in as well, although the 40GB PS3 will apparently be bundled with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray. Suppose the 40GB PS3 could be offered in white as well.

I heard it was missing 2 usb ports and did not have the memory card reader.

It's bizarre that they wouldn't include compatibility with PS2 games - it's not like that would cause a cost increase.

Another reason to wait another year to buy one of those things -- if ever.

It probably would cost a decent amount of money to include some of the PS2 hardware they had been including actually. It would especially help drop costs if removing this hardware also led to a smaller/cheaper motherboard, smaller/cheaper power supply, a cheaper cooling solution, etc.

And I'm still pretty sure that they're working on getting a pure software solution working for PS2 BC. Once (or should I say if?) they get that working well enough, this will probably be the standard for all the PS3 SKUs.

At the pace they're going, PS3s won't even be compatible with PS3 games in another year. :)

For the sake of having it in this thread, I'll ask these questions again:

1 If one still has a PS2 and space is no issue, who cares about whether the PS3 is backward compatible?

2 Exactly what are the disadvantages of no memory card port?

3 Can you connect an external hard drive to one of the USB ports? If so, this somewhat makes the hard drive size a moot point. Even so, if you don't download video to the PS3, shouldn't 40GB be plenty?

4 What are the primary uses of the USB ports on the PS3?

I won't bring up the lack of games again until sometime in November when I have to decided which system to buy for my son.

Possibly the fear of the PS2 dying some day I suppose (probably how I would feel if I still had my PS2). Of course, I'm assuming one still wants to play PS2 games.

Not much really. I've rarely, if ever, used it. Just a little extra convenience if you happen to own (and use) one of the supported memory card formats. I'd rather just use USB storage.

    Yes to both questions.

Note that I believe USB HDDs have to support FAT32 IIRC.
    1) Charging the PS3 controller (or other USB devices).
    2) Connecting a USB storage device (like a USB HDD or flash drive...or even something like a camera with a USB connection).
    3) Connecting an adapter, allowing for access to memory cards or even more USB ports.
    4) Connecting a mouse and keyboard to use in some games, web browsing, or Linux.
    5) Connecting a USB printer that is supported by the PS3.
    6) Connecting a PS3 peripheral, like the PS Eye, which can be used in games.

The USB ports haves uses that are pretty similar to what they're used for on PCs actually.

    Thanks for the replies.

This is the PS3 Sony should have sold from day 1. I understand productions costs have gone down, but if Sony had somehow been able to market this model PS3 for $399.00 from the beginning, they would be in a much better position.

For a very large number of people, fewer USB ports, a smaller hard drive, no memory port (especially with being able to use a USB drive instead) are total non-issues. If I buy one, we definitely won't be using our PS3 to do things already done on a PC like web browsing or linux. That doesn't make sense to me. For us, the PS3 will strictly be a gaming machine.

It will come down to the games, as in how many "E" and "T" games (already released and in the pipeline) that are appropriate and fun for my 12 year-old.

I don't see how that implies that the PS3 is the last system for Sony. All it says is that they are selling off the cell production and will buy the chips from now on. This is not something that is uncommon.

How many fewer USB ports are there? And do USB hubs work with the PS3, if so couldn't you just buy one of those to make up the difference?

I believe that had the ps2 hardware down to one chip. That is probably 10 year technology. i am sure I didn't cost them too much (10-15 bucks) to put that chip in there. I wish they would have just dropped the 60gb to 400 bucks. I would have definitely bought that.

I think this is a good buy, assuming it comes with a wireless controller...If not, still a great Blu-Ray player....

I just wish those who bought the systems first got a freebie or something for paying a high price from the get-go...wishfull thinking, I know...

I believe it has 2 USB ports and yes USB hubs do work with them, so you could just buy one if you really needed more ports. The HDD size is moot too because they use 2.5" SATA drives so you can upgrade to whatever size you want.

I think I remember hearing that Sony dropped the 60GB because 60GB hard drives were being produced less in the industry and have moved to 40GB increments.

    I could be wrong though.

If console components are anything like laptop components, then that PS2 chip should probably cost half of what you quoted...
