If it's "more work", and you know Person ABC will get assigned to it... ask Person ABC how they would like it if you brought it up... instead of just saying "Well, I have an IDEA! I think Person ABC can do it very well!"

I hate a-holes who say "Well, I know SWOLY is good at [insert something I am good at doing]" just because I did it ONE TIME.

    Time Distribution:
    90% Clutchfans "research"
    5% work

I will not post here what I do with my other 5%. Let's just say I work hard during that time.

Never dip your pen in the company ink. But if you really have to make sure that it's someone on your same paygrade and not an underling or superior.

And for heaven's sake, don't brag about nailing the office fox like it's another notch on the belt.

Volunteer to work on the tasks that HAVE to be done, so that when you do them you come off as a hero, even though you're just doing your job. :)

And don't throw people under the bus. I always like to point out that it's much easier to be an editor than an author. (i.e. - it's easy to criticize, but it's a lot harder to come up with viable, robust solutions)

    REAL-WORLD examples, please?

Meet your deadlines, but give two times as much time to prevent loss of time for unforeseen ad-hoc requests and in-between tasks.

DO NOT brag about finishing on time or early to those who struggle. Only two bad things can come out of that: you'll be given LOTS MORE WORK more often and you'll be known as a goody-two-shoes to your peers.

Just because you're the bosses friend, don't think he/she won't write you up for insubordination even though you've been with the company for 10+ years and have never been in trouble once. Keep the sarcastic remarks in an argument to a minimum, or zero.

Don't call your boss at home, talk about work, then ask for a raise. They're really not a big fan of this.

DO NOT accept drunken phone calls while you too have been drinking from another employee of the opposite sex who you might find beer goggle attractive. Makes Monday pretty ****ing awkward.

    Finger-pointing is lame.

If someone breaks the build, point out what is broken, not who broke it! (for example)

this. i've b****ed about my job here a few times, but i stay as far away from office politics and gossip as i can. i've seen issues blow up because of gossip and what not, so it's nice to have plausible deniability if you're asked anything.

So... you have no REAL WORLD examples, do you...? :( You just wanted to say "passive aggressive" but don't know what that means... or what?

Everything in emails. Save them. CC people when appropriate. The more documented stuff you got, the more people are held accountable, the better.

I work for a very large company and office politics can be down right evil.

Keep your personal life out of work. Least people know about you, the better off you are.

Worry about you and only you. Don't get caught up in everyone else's business. So if your really good friend that you have known since you've been with the company is in trouble, don't try to go to bat for them. 9 out of 10 times that same person would leave you out to dry.

Try not to drink with your co-workers. This is probably the biggest mistake I see people do all the time. It's one of the quickest ways of getting fired.

Work hard. Don't look for people to notice you because if you work hard, someone will see. Just don't get screwed over.

Remember that no one is your friend. Sometimes your boss will try to pacify you when it comes to raises, bonuses, or promotions. You have to remember you because no one else will.

Last but not least... Stay out of office romance. Nothing good comes out of that. I seen this happen too many times.

Sometimes, its your own thoughts and attitudes that bring about negative consequences.
